PANAJI: GM Anurag Mhamal has been appointed as Coach-cum-nonplaying captain of Angola for the forthcoming 44th Chess Olympiad to be held at Mahabalipuram-Chennai from 28th July to 9th August 2022, states a press release.
A total of 186 countries in Open section and 160 countries in Women section, will be participating in the 44th Chess Olympiad. A total of 250 Grandmasters (235 in Open and 15 in Women section) will be in action apart from International Masters, Women Grandmasters, Fide Masters, Women International Masters, Candidate Masters – with the total number in both categories being 994 (585 + 409).
As a part of the various nations’ contingents, many non-playing Grandmasters at the Chess Olympiad will be functioning in the capacity of Coach/Captain/Manager. In keeping with the system, Goa’s first GM, Anurag gets the rare honour of becoming a Coach-cum-nonplaying captain. He had recently carried the Olympiad torch for Goa and Madhya Pradesh.
