G20: GOA GEARS UP FOR 3RD DEVELOPMENTAL WORKING GROUP MEETING

The G20 Summit meetings being hosted in Goa is bringing together world leaders to discuss important global issues. Goa is now set to host its second G20 meeting – 3rd Developmental Working Group, from May 9 to 11 that will focus on sustainable development issues. The meeting that will take place at the Taj Resort and Convention Centre, Dona Paula will have 71 foreign delegates from the G20 nations.

The representatives will discuss and work towards finding solutions to global issues related to sustainable development, including digital principles, green transitions, and enhancing international coordination and partnerships. Key topics of discussion will include the G20’s role in accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Preparations on various fronts are underway. Protocol, however, is by and large the most important- with adequate arrangements being made at the airport during arrivals.

“The 3rd Development Working Group is looking at how we can accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). We are aiming at some very bold actionable outcomes, including the high-level principles, which is pertaining to lifestyle for environment. The meeting will also focus on ways to accelerate transitions. The world is in the midst of a digital revolution and so we are also looking at enhancing our global climate ambitions,” said K. Nagraj Naidu, Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs. He further stated that in order to achieve true gender equality and empower women, it is essential to adopt a development approach led by women themselves.

Sanjit Rodrigues, Nodal Officer G20 said, “Preparations are on-going and the processes have been chalked out well in advance. With the first meeting hosted in April, we are now well prepared for this meeting and the others as well. Each meeting of G20 is crucial and though some SOP’s in terms of preparation remain standard, in terms of giving delegates a truly local and unique experience, each time new ideas are conceived and worked on.”

From arrival of delegates, until they leave the Goan shore, various aspects are being thoroughly looked into to ensure a hassle free experience in Goa. Reception counters are setup at both airports, Dabolim International Airport and Manohar International Airport Mopa, with volunteers and liaison officers who will interact with delegates and welcome them to Goa for the meeting.

Transportation of delegates to and fro hotels has been planned meticulously and those delegates arriving in groups will be transported via electric buses. Luxury cars are also being utilised for high profile delegates.

Security measures have been thoroughly looked into, to ensure safety and security of visiting delegates at all times, with a recee being conducted. Police personnel have been deployed at all venues during the meet. Men in uniform and civil attire will be monitoring movement and security round the clock.

On arrival at the hotel, delegates will get a feel of Goa through a cultural performance planned, as they check in. On the cultural front, a package is being prepared that will give the delegates a sneak peek into the rich culture of Goa through song and dance.

Every meeting will have different concepts included to make the experience in Goa for the delegates, a memorable one. This time, an Art trail has been planned at the resort, based on the theme of India’s traditional art and crafts which will showcase art and crafts from across regions displayed. The Art project in the hotel has been initiated through partnership with the art knowledge partner – Serendipity Arts Foundation. Various departments and the organisers have been working tirelessly to lay down the required infrastructure and set in place preparations for the G20 meetings.

The Group of Twenty or G20, is the premier forum for international cooperation comprising of the world’s most-powerful 19 economies and the EU. The G20 group was established with the goal to solve major global issues which are related to the stability of International Finance, the international economy, migration due to changes in climatic conditions, and sustainable development. Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Republic of Korea, Republic of South Africa, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States of America, and the European Union (EU) form the G20 group. Representatives from guest countries and international organisations have also been invited to attend the Summit.
