DSYA & SAG’S CAPACITY-BUILDING WORKSHOP ON APPLIED SPORTS SCIENCE IN PROGRESS AT PEDDEM SPORTS COMPLEX

The three-day Capacity Building Workshop on Applied Sports Science – “Bridging Science and Sports” was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Goa, Dr. Pramod Sawant at the Dayanand Bandodkar Krida Sankool, Indoor Stadium, Peddem, Mapusa on Tuesday.

The inaugural function was held in the presence of Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs, Dr. Ramesh Tawadkar, and Dr. Ajay R. Gaude, Director of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Goa, and Executive Director, Sports Authority of Goa.

Organised jointly by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Goa, and the Sports Authority of Goa, the three-day workshop aims to strengthen the knowledge and skills of coaches and Physical Education teachers by integrating modern sports science into coaching practices.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant emphasised the importance of scientific training methods in developing high-performance athletes and reiterated the Government of Goa’s commitment to promoting excellence in sports through capacity building, quality infrastructure, and continuous professional development of coaches.

The CM stressed the need to develop a strong network of Master Trainers in Sports Science across all talukas of Goa. He emphasised that this three-day capacity-building workshop should lay the foundation for creating trained resource persons who can disseminate scientific coaching practices, sports medicine, sports nutrition, injury prevention, and performance management at the grassroots level.

Dr Sawant urged the participants to become ambassadors of sports science by sharing the knowledge and skills gained during the workshop with coaches, athletes, and educational institutions in their respective talukas.

Reiterating the Government of Goa’s commitment to strengthening the State’s sporting ecosystem, the Chief Minister said that scientific training, continuous coach education, and the adoption of modern sports science are essential to producing world-class athletes and achieving excellence in sports.

Sports Minister Dr. Ramesh Tawadkar highlighted the State Government’s sustained efforts to create a robust sports ecosystem and encouraged participants to make the best use of the workshop by adopting evidence-based coaching practices for athlete development.

Dr. Ajay R. Gaude welcomed the dignitaries and participants, stating that the workshop is designed to bridge the gap between sports science and practical coaching. He noted that the programme would equip coaches and Physical Education teachers with the latest scientific knowledge and practical tools to improve athlete performance while ensuring health, safety, and long-term development.
The workshop features expert-led sessions on Exercise Physiology, Strength & Conditioning, Sports Nutrition & Hydration, Sports Psychology, Biomechanics, Injury Prevention & Management, Sports Medicine & Recovery, Monitoring Training Load & Performance, Planning Age-Appropriate Training, and Ethics, Anti-Doping & Athlete Welfare.

Participants will also engage in lectures, practical demonstrations, case studies, group activities, and hands-on sessions, with a special focus on Goa’s climatic conditions.

The workshop will continue until 5th August 2026, bringing together sports scientists, experts, coaches, and Physical Education teachers committed to advancing scientific coaching and athlete development in Goa.

The workshop will feature eminent resource persons from leading institutions across India, including: Dr. Moayanger P. Ao – Sports Medicine: Injury Prevention and Athlete Care; Prof. Sandeep Tiwari – Sports Training: Principles of Training and Periodization; Prof. Usha Sujit Nair – Sports Physiology: Exercise Responses and Adaptations; Dr. Keren Harish Tiwari – Sports Nutrition: Nutrition for Training and Competition; Dr. Kuldeep Singh – Sports Psychology: Motivation, Confidence and Mental Skills Training; Dr. Viswanath Sundar – Applied Biomechanics in Sports and Physical Education; Prof. Reena Cheruvalath – Ethics in Sports and Physical Education.

The programme will include expert lectures, practical demonstrations, field-based applications, video-assisted learning, and interactive discussions, providing participants with hands-on experience in applying sports science principles to coaching and physical education.

The initiative reflects the commitment of the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs and the Sports Authority of Goa towards enhancing the professional competence of coaches and physical education teachers, thereby contributing to the long-term development of sports and athlete performance in Goa.

The workshop is restricted to coaches of SAG & DSYA and Physical Education Teachers nominated by the dept.
