GOA’S SUYASH PRABHUDESSAI MAKES A MARK ON IPL DEBUT

PANAJI: Goan all-rounder Suyash Prabhudessai made a mark on his IPL debut for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Chennai Super Kings in Navi Mumbai tonight.

The 24-year-old hard-hitting batsman delivered an exciting cameo knock of 34 runs off 18 balls. Coming into bat at No. 6 with the asking rate soaring for the target of 217, Suyash struck five crisp boundaries – two of them were amazing shots of the bowling of England pacer Chris Jordan; and one six employing a big sweep-shot off the bowling of CSK captain Ravindra Jadeja. However, he was castled by Sri Lanka mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana when it looked as if Suyash and his blossoming partnership with Shahbaz Ahmed would take RCB deeper into the chase with the explosive DK still to come. In the end, RCB fell short by 23 runs.

Suyash was a livewire in the field and provided the first glimpse of his outstanding athletic ability early in the match when he effected the run-out of CSK’s Moeen Ali. He also took a brilliant running catch off Robin Uthappa but that didn’t count owing to the delivery by Md Siraj being a no-ball.

Suyash was first picked by RCB for last season’s IPL but did not get a playing opportunity. He was once again bought by RCB at this year’s auction and Suyash has now shown his class with a confident display in his first ever IPL match.

Suyash’s emergence in the IPL also ends the drought of Goan players in the world’s most competitive T20 league since 2017 when former CSK star Shadab Jakati featured for Gujarat Lions in his last season.
