In light of the increasing number of eye injuries caused by fireworks during Diwali, ASG Eye Hospital, Goa has announced a nationwide initiative offering free eye treatment for children below 15 years of age who sustain eye injuries due to firecrackers during Diwali celebrations.
The 10-day campaign, running from October 15 to 24, 2025, is being implemented across all ASG Eye Hospital centres in India, including its branch in Goa. The initiative underscores ASG’s commitment to eye safety, preventive awareness, and timely intervention to protect children from avoidable blindness during the festive season.Under this initiative, children injured by fireworks will receive free comprehensive eye examinations and rehabilitative treatments.
“Every Diwali, we see children and even adults losing their eyesight due to preventable firecracker injuries. Our goal is not just to treat, but to educate — because most of these accidents can be avoided with simple precautions,” said Dr. Sean Da Silva, Medical Director, ASG Eye Hospital, Goa.
According to national data, over 2,000 firecracker-related eye injuries were reported across India in 2023, with nearly 60% involving children under 15 years and around 10% resulting in partial or permanent vision loss.
Dr. Da Silva emphasised that a few basic safety measures can dramatically reduce the risk of such accidents. He urged the public to avoid lighting firecrackers in crowded areas or near flammable materials, and instead celebrate in open spaces away from trees, vehicles, and power cables. He further advised wearing closed shoes, cotton clothing, and protective glasses to minimize burns and eye injuries.
Firecrackers should always be placed on the ground before lighting — never held in the hands. Maintain a safe distance of at least five to six meters after lighting a cracker, and never attempt to inspect or touch half-lit fireworks. Pour water on them instead. He also encouraged families to keep a bucket of water or sand nearby, supervise children closely, and avoid leaning over fireworks while lighting them.
In case of an eye injury, Dr. Da Silva cautioned against rubbing the affected eye or applying ointments. “If a spark or debris enters the eye, gently rinse it with clean water and rush immediately to the nearest hospital or emergency eye care centre. Quick action can make the difference between full recovery and permanent vision loss,” he said.
Concluding on a hopeful note, Dr. Da Silva reminded everyone of the true essence of the festival he added “Diwali is a festival of light — let’s ensure it remains that way.
Through this initiative, ASG Eye Hospital seeks to spread awareness about eye safety and encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly while protecting the most precious gift we have — our vision.”
