Colva Beach, one of Goa’s most iconic and internationally renowned destinations, is set to undergo a comprehensive infrastructure development initiative under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme 2.0. The project aims to enhance the visitor experience while preserving the local environment and supporting the livelihoods of local businesses.

Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, along with Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas, Margao MLA  Digamber Kamat, Benaulim Panchayat members, and key stakeholders visited Colva Beach to discuss the scope of the upcoming development project. The first phase of the project is set to commence after January 5, 2025, focussing on resolving critical infrastructure issues while ensuring minimal disruption to the daily operations of local vendors and businesses.

Khaunte emphasized that this initiative is part of a larger commitment by the Government of Goa to promote sustainable tourism and enhance the state’s cultural and natural attractions. “This project will uplift Colva Beach by providing world-class amenities, while ensuring that the traditional livelihoods of the local community are protected. As part of the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, the Government of India is focussing on holistic tourism development, and Goa is poised to be a significant beneficiary. The development will include improvements in waste management, beach access, public facilities, new bridges and restructuring of bridges, shopping annexure and special facilities for specially-abled individuals along with other essential infrastructure, ensuring a cleaner and more tourist-friendly Colva Beach,” he said.

Kamat said, “Colva Beach being the significant location in South Goa, the recent development of this beach is very encouraging. With support from the local community, we can  expect to see improved infrastructure at Colva Beach.”

Viegas echoed the Minister’s sentiments, expressing their support for the initiative and highlighting its importance for both local residents and visitors alike.

The project also reflects the commitment of the state to work in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting regenerative tourism practices that benefit both the environment and the local economy.
