The Laxmidas Borkar Janashatabdi Samaroh Samiti, in collaboration with the Department of Posts, organised the release of a commemorative postage stamp and First Day Cover with a special cancellation in honour of Late Laxmidas Borkar, distinguished freedom fighter, journalist, and social reformer from Goa. The event was held at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao on 17th August 2025.
The release was done by Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle, at the hands of Chief Guest P. Ashok. Gajapathi Raju, Governor of Goa.
While addressing the gathering, the Governor spoke on the indomitable spirit of Laxmidas Borkar whose fearless journalism and activism challenged Portuguese rule in Goa, often at the cost of imprisonment and personal suffering. He emphasised the importance of remembering and celebrating the sacrifices of freedom fighters to inspire future generations.
Amitabh Singh talked about Borkar’s pivotal role in the struggle for freedom and his lifelong dedication to public service and literature. He expressed pride in releasing the commemorative postage stamp and First Day Cover to honour “a man who devoted over five decades to the cause of the nation and society.”
Dr. Nitin Borkar, son of Late Laxmidas Borkar, talked about the remarkable contributions of his father to the freedom movement between 1943 and 1961, including his close association with Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, his journalistic pursuits, and organisational leadership. He also outlined the year-long commemorative activities undertaken in honour of Laxmidas Borkar.
Eminent dignitaries present at the event included Damodar Mauzo, Jnanpith Awardee and noted Konkani writer; Gurudas Sawal, President of the Samaroh Samiti; Dr. Narayan Desai, scholar and keynote speaker; Ramesh P. Patil, Director Postal Services, Goa Region. The family members of Laxmidas Borkar, philatelists, and the officials from the Postal department were also present at the event.
The function concluded with the screening of Das-Parv, a documentary chronicling the life and legacy of Laxmidas Borkar.
The Commemorative Postage Stamp and First Day Cover issued on 17th August 2025 will be available for sale at the Panaji Philatelic Counter, Panaji Head Post Office.
