FC Goa announced the launch of a new community project aimed at fostering a deeper connection between the sport and the younger generation across the state.
This marks another significant step in the ISL club’s ongoing efforts to make football more accessible to everyone, following their recent move to reduce ticket prices for their home matches in the Indian Super League (ISL).
The initiative is part of the club’s swift response to discussions at the GFDC Football Summit 2024, where key issues surrounding the state of football in Goa were highlighted. Recognizing the need to bridge the gap between football and the community, FC Goa will take more such proactive steps to ignite interest and make football more inclusive for all.
Ravi Puskur, CEO of FC Goa, spoke passionately about the Club’s commitment to community outreach. “At FC Goa, football isn’t just a game – it’s a way to bring people together, and we are committed to ensuring that the sport is accessible to all. Whether it’s through lowering ticket prices or taking football to schools across the state, we believe in creating opportunities for young Goans to fall in love with the game.
“The GFDC Summit made it clear that we have a responsibility to nurture the sport’s future, and this project is a reflection of our passion to connect with our community and inspire the next generation of footballers,” he added.
The project, focused on increasing access to football for school children, kicked off with an inspiring visit to Loyola High School in Margao. FC Goa stars Rowllin Borges and Brison Fernandes were present at the event, interacting with enthusiastic students and sharing their passion for the game.
This marks the beginning of a long-term engagement with schools across Goa, as the Club aims to foster a footballing community from the grassroots level. Their goal is to reach 25 schools by the end of this season and 150 schools over the next three seasons. By organizing workshops, player meet-and-greets and interactive sessions, FC Goa intend to spark the interest of the next generation, making football a key part of their development both on and off the field.
The event at Loyola High School witnessed overwhelming excitement as Rowllin Borges and Brison Fernandes participated in various activities with the students, shared their football journeys, and encouraged the kids to chase their dreams.
Reflecting on the experience, Rowllin said, “Being here today with the kids was a humbling experience. Seeing their enthusiasm for football reminds me of why I fell in love with the game in the first place. It’s an honour to be part of an initiative that gives back to the community and helps young talents discover their potential.”
Brison Fernandes echoed this sentiment: “Engaging with the students and seeing their excitement made my day. It’s amazing to see how football can bring people together, and I hope we can inspire more kids to take up the sport. FC Goa’s commitment to building a stronger football community is something I’m proud to be a part of.”
The school’s principal, Fr. Simon De Melo, S.J., highlighted the importance of sports in holistic education and praised FC Goa’s efforts. “Football is not just a game; it is a tool for character building, teamwork, and leadership. We are grateful to FC Goa for initiating this project, and we are thrilled that our students had the chance to engage with professional players. It’s moments like these that can light the spark in young hearts, inspiring them to pursue their passions with determination,” he said.
FC Goa plans to visit several other schools across the state in the coming months. By empowering children with access to professional guidance, training resources and mentorship from top players, FC Goa aim to lay a strong foundation for the growth of football in Goa for years to come. This is just one of many steps the Club is set to take as part of their broader commitment to revitalizing football in the region and addressing the challenges discussed at the GFDC Football Summit.
