PANAJI: Anish Kamath and Anjana Kumari emerged champions in the men’s and women’s category respectively, at the State Ranking Badminton Tournament at Indoor stadium, Campal, here. Anjana Kumari won a triple crown while Tejan Fallary and Kamlesh Kanji won double crowns. The tournament was organised by Shuttlers Club and Morning Badminton Club in collaboration with Goa Badminton Association and the Sports Authority of Goa.
Both Anish and Anjana, registered contrasting wins in the finals at the season-ending tournament.
In men’s section, 16-year-old Anish, who had a fine run in the tournament, played a near-flawless match to register an exciting 21-14, 21-17 win over Sushil Nayak to emerge triumphant. Top seed Anjana Kumari on the other hand, was stretched to the distance before registering a hardfought 21-12, 18-21, 21-8 win over number two seed Yasmin Sayed in women’s singles finals.
Earlier in the men’s singles semi-finals, Anish defeated Karan Dhavaskar 23-21, 19-21, 22-20 in a closely fought match while Sushil upset top seed Tejan Fallary 21-15, 21-8 in the other semis.
In men’s doubles, Tejan Fallary / Arjun Fallary battled past Floyd Araujo / Fredrick Fernandes 21-16, 23-21 to win the title while the women’s doubles title was won by Anjana Kumari / Yasmin Sayed who recorded a thrilling 21-15, 16-21, 21-18 win over Anar Singbal / Neha Sahakari.
In mixed doubles finals, Tejan Fallary / Anjana Kumari defeated Ayaan Shaikh / Yasmin Sayed 21-15, 21-18 to win the title. In the promotional veterans events, Sandip Kanji / Kamlesh Kanji defeated Ashutosh Pednekar / Kunal Sanvordekar 30 – 29 to win the veterans doubles. In veterans mixed doubles, Kamlesh Kanji / Betty Dourado defeated Darwin Barreto / Supriya Pai Kuchelkar 30 -18 to lift the title.
Following 3rd-Place (semi-finals) prizes were awarded: Karan Dhavaskar and Tejan Fallary (men’s singles); Synnovia D’ Souza and Janhavi Mahale (women’s singles); Karan Dhavaskar / Yash Kunkolienkar and Ayaan Shaikh / Sanath Kamat (men’s doubles); Soumya Deshpande / Sriya Saraf and Dhiti Lotlikar / Janhavi Mahale (women’s doubles); Sanath Kamat / Pratishtha Shenoy and Karan Dhavaskar / Anar Singbal(mixed doubles); Shamsudeen C.K / Darwin Barreto and Amit Kakkar / Vishal Vernekar (veterans doubles) and Ashutosh Pednekar / Manjiri M and Navin Palyekar /Vrushali Cardoso (veterans mixed doubles). Lakshita Sawal and Yash Desai emerged as promising players of the tournament. Richard D’ Souza (IFS) was the chief guest, while GBA members Narahar Thakur (President), Sandeep Heble (Secretary), Nilesh Nayak (Tournament Director) and Vinayak Kamat (Technical Advisor) also graced the finals.
