GOA CANCER SOCIETY: WEBSITE LAUNCHED, REPORT CARD HIGHLIGHTS EXTENSIVE WORK SINCE 2014

Goa Cancer Society (GCS) launched its website on Thursday. Chairman of Dempo Group of Companies, Shrinivas Dempo graced the occasion along with other dignitaries.            

GCS is a voluntary non-profit organisation; dedicated to service, education and treatment towards fulfilling the commitments in the global fight against cancer.

Some of the activities of GCS from year 2014 onwards are as follows:

•Dr Sharad Vaidya Cancer Screening Package (subsidised) – A cancer screening package was offered at a concessional rate. The package was open for public in the month of Feb-March from 2014-15 to 2017-18 at Manipal Hospitals-Goa.This package was made available round-the-year from 30th October 2018. (Presently it is available at Manipal Hospitals-Goa @ Rs.1250  for men & Rs.1750 for women). From 2014 -23, GCS has spent approximately Rs.30,00,000 & over 2000 patients availed this facility. In the FY 2021-22 & 2022-23, a total of 366 patients (330 females & 36 males) availed this facility.

• Financial Assistance Scheme with Manipal Hospitals Goa – Till date, GCS has helped over 500 patients sanctioning around Rs.1 Crore 90 lakh, while the bills paid are to a tune of Rs. 1 Crore 40 lakhs. For Financial year 2021-22 and 2022-23 -186 patients (127 females & 59 males) used this facility & the amount sanctioned was Rs.78 lakh.

• Financial Assistance to patients from other hospitals – A financial assistance is provided for cancer patients from other hospitals. From 2016-17 to 2022-23, 43 patients have been assisted to the tune of Rs.11 lakhs. During  FY 2021-22 & 2022-23, a total of 15 patients (11- female & 4- male ) were assisted to the tune of Rs.4,69,000. Patients came mainly from GMC, Menezes Hospital –Margao,Tata Memorial Hospital-Mumbai, Healthway Hospital-Panaji.

• DILASA Project – A Centre for terminally-ill at Farmagudi, Ponda managed by IMA Ponda Charitable Trust, was inaugurated on 22nd December 2018. Apart from corpus donation of Rs. 20 lakh sponsoring 4 rooms, GCS conducts Cancer Detection Camps and CMEs to promote, support and provide all possible help. GCS also provides financial help to the terminal cancer patients at DILASA Centre, since 2019-20  a total of 43 patients have been sanctioned and paid Rs.8,12,794. During FY 2021-22 & 2022-23, the Society sanctioned 6 lakhs to 25 (female-16, male-9) terminally-ill cancer patients.

• Research Projects – Funding and Support as GCS has set aside a sum of Rs. 5 lakh per annum to encourage research in cancer by the doctors of Goa or from any part of the country. Since 2014, a total of  7 projects have been sanctioned Rs.30 lakhs, while the bills paid are worth Rs 19 lakhs. In the FY 2021-22 & 2022-23, 6 projects have been sanctioned, amounting to Rs 11 lakhs.

• Annual Lecture – From 2014 onwards,  GCS has conducted 7 annual lectures for general public and doctors by prominent cancer specialist and surgeons. Approximately, Rs 5 lakh have been spent on these 7 annual lectures.

• Cancer Detection Camps – From 2014 onwards, GCS has conducted 28 cancer detection camps in remote and rural parts of Goa screening over 2000 patients. The spending is approximately Rs 5 lakhs. In  FY 2021-22 & 2022-23, eight awareness camps were conducted with the amount spent being Rs. 86,520.

• Make a Wish Foundation – GCS works in collaboration with Make a Wish Foundation India fulfilling wishes of kids battling cancer. Till date, GCS has paid Rs 4.5 lakhs fulfilling wishes of around 54 children.

The GCS press communique also mentioned that GCS is registered under Sections 12A and 80G, making the donors’ contribution eligible for tax benefits. Additionally, GCS is also certified for donations under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
