Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant attended the celebration of World Environment Day on the UNEP theme ‘Ending Plastic Pollution Globally’, organised by Department of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Goa, at Raj Bhavan, Dona Paula.
Chief Secretary, Dr. V. Candavelou IAS, Secretary ( Environment), Arun Kumar Mishra, IAS, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, Shet Sadanand, Director, Environment & Climate Change, Sachin S. Desai, Social worker from Maharashtra, India, Prakash Amte and his wife, Mandakini Amte & others were also present.
In his message, Dr. Sawant said that Goa remains committed to balancing ecological preservation with economic growth. “From promoting regenerative tourism and embracing green transport avenues to expanding green cover and empowering local communities through climate-resilient practices, we are taking decisive steps towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future. On #WorldEnvironmentDay, let us all be Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam in action — where nature is not only protected but celebrated,” asserted the Chief Minister and drew attention to grave situation with plastic pollution.
“World Environment Day 2025 is a global call to action on ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollution.’ Every year on June 5th, millions unite to protect our planet’s health and future. Plastic pollution threatens ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. It chokes waterways, harms marine life, and fills landfills for centuries,” stated the Chief Minister.
Aligned with the United Nations Environment Programme’s #BeatPlasticPollution movement, Goa continues to implement policies and practices that reduce plastic waste and promote sustainability, emphasised Dr Sawant.
