Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd (IPSCDL) held a meeting today at its office to address concerns regarding the Fishermen Wharf at Ribandar. The meeting was chaired by Sanjit Rodrigues, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, IPSCDL. Local fishermen voiced their request to reduce the Wharf length from 50 metres to 35 metres, citing operational difficulties during low tide.
The meeting was also attended by Rohit Monserrate, Mayor, CCP, Sanjeev Naik, Dy. Mayor, CCP, Clen Madeira, Commissioner, CCP, Vithal Chopdekar, Corporator, CCP, Domingos Fernandes, Local Fisherman, Benny Cardoso, Local Fisherman and others further demonstrating a collaborative effort to address community needs.
One of the key issues raised by the local fishermen pertained to the maneuverability of traditional fishing canoes during low tide, citing challenges in entering and exiting the culvert at Patto Ribandar due to insufficient space and strong water currents.
In response to the fishermen’s concerns, IPSCDL has decided to accept the request to reduce the Wharf length to 35 meters. This adjustment will facilitate easier docking for canoes from both sides of the Wharf, thereby improving operational efficiency and safety during low tide.
As a result of this decision, the capacity of fishing boats, initially proposed at 20, will now be reduced to 12. However, this adjustment aligns with IPSCDL’s commitment to prioritize the needs of the local fishing community while ensuring sustainable development.
Recognizing the vital role of the local fishing community, IPSCDL, under the Smart City Mission, is committed to enhancing livelihood opportunities. The redevelopment of the Fisherman Wharf aims to streamline operations, boost the local market and generate employment for fishermen in and around Ribandar.
The representatives of the Ribandar fishermen community expressed their gratitude at the commencement of the said project, which had been a long pending demand of the local fishermen in and around Ribandar, stated a press release.
