IPSCDL & KTCL ANNOUNCE SMART TRANSIT: IT INITIATIVES TO ELEVATE COMMUTER EXPERIENCE IN PANAJI

Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd. (IPSCDL) and Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd. (KTCL) today announced the implementation of a streamlined and paperless travel experience for passengers on its EV bus service in Panaji through an all-new Smart Transit Card and mobile app “Tummoc”.

This initiative is a joint effort by IPSCDL and KTCL, featuring the deployment of 48 electric buses on 7 major routes , in and around Panaji, equipped with innovative route planning. The project also includes Smart Transit IT interventions to enhance cost-efficiency, promote green practices and enable conductor-less operations. M/s Iteration Technologies Private Limited are the IT partners.

These EV bus services have proven to be a successful initiative, providing reliable and eco-friendly transportation to the citizens of Panaji. From July 1st – 31st , 2024 , the overall performance metrics has been encouraging with around 68,603 passengers utilizing the new intra-city bus service,  with an average 2213 riders per day. The total kilometres clocked by the buses is 43,455 km from July 1-31, 2024 with an average of 1401 km per day. Total Ridership for August 2024 till Date is 49,664.

To further improve ridership and commuter satisfaction, IPSCDL and KTCL are introducing the Smart Transit Card and the “Tummoc” mobile app. This pioneering initiative aims to revolutionize urban commuting by emphasising sustainability, efficiency and convenience.

The Smart Transit Card will transition all paper passes to digital format. IPSCDL and KTCL will initially offer cards for students, senior citizens, differently-abled individuals, HIV and cancer patients with a special concession besides offering prepaid wallet based cards for general commuters with recharge options. With Smart Transit Cards to be issued, seamless commuting is ensured through NFC (Near Field Communication) -enabled validators inside the EV buses.

Issuance of Smart Transit Cards is made available at Specially set up kiosks arranged at  Panaji Bus Stand, Panaji Ferry Wharf, Panaji Market ,Miramar Beach and GMC Bambolim. Commuters can avoid kiosk queues for registration by applying and  paying for it online.

The Smart Transit Card, which can be availed online or at Kiosk centres for Rs. 150 (Inclusive of GST), which will include a Top up of Rs.75 for first 500 commuters. This card has a lifetime validity. Utilizing advanced NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, the card operates on a Tap In and Tap Out system.

The “Tummoc” app allows users to book tickets with QR code-based validation and access live details of schedules to keep commuters well-informed. It also provides real-time bus tracking and accurate Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) for enhanced commuter convenience. Available on the Play Store and Apple Store, the app features a user-friendly interface and easy on-boarding process. It includes a trip planner for better decision-making. These tickets are validated on-board using state-of-the-art validators or electronic ticketing machines.

Route Details

The first phase of Panaji’s Smart City bus services was  launched on July 1, 2024, with eight buses on Yellow Route . The Blue route and the Green route began operation on July 19, 2024, with Five and Four buses, respectively. The Red route has begun operation on August 13, 2024 with Two Buses.

The Smart City e-Bus Service covers multiple key routes in and around  Panaji with each route having a colour – code for comprehensive city connectivity. The routes descriptions:

The e-buses in Panaji’s Smart City project are equipped with several salient features designed to enhance safety, accessibility and convenience for all commuters. Each bus is fitted with CCTV surveillance and panic buttons to ensure passenger safety. Additionally, accessibility features cater specifically to disabled and senior citizens, providing them with a more comfortable and secure travel experience with low-floor design in some of the buses, which ensures wheelchair accessibility, promoting inclusive transportation for everyone. The e-buses also, has an advanced Passenger Information System, which includes in-bus information displays and automated announcements to keep commuters well-informed throughout their journey.

Advanced Charging Infrastructure:

The Panaji Smart City project includes cutting-edge infrastructure to support its electric bus fleet, featuring state-of-the-art charging stations with high-power fast chargers and advanced battery management systems for efficiency and reliability. Strategically located, the Porvorim e-bus Depot has 8 fast chargers with 16 charging guns, the Campal Parade Ground has 2 fast chargers with 4 charging guns, and Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukerjee Stadium also has 2 fast chargers with 4 charging guns. These facilities ensure minimal downtime and maintain efficient bus operations.

The Panaji Smart City project yields significant outcomes: it promotes eco-friendly commuting and green transit solutions throughout Panaji City, reduces operational costs through paperless ticketing solutions and enhances the commuter experience with multipurpose smart transit cards and mobile ticketing solutions for seamless travel.

The Smart Transit card and mobile app can be used across all KTCL buses, integrating local transit systems under a unified platform for broader reach and improved connectivity.
