As part of its ongoing efforts to champion sustainable and climate-conscious urban development, Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) has installed 11 medium-sized benches crafted entirely from recycled plastic at the new public space near National Theatre–Café Bhonsle. This initiative is a vital component of the comprehensive transformation of TB Cunha Road, designed to convert this iconic heritage corridor into a dynamic, safe and aesthetically appealing urban environment that serves both the local community and visiting tourists.
Executed in partnership with the OneEarth Foundation, the installation exemplifies IPSCDL’s commitment to embracing circular economy practices—demonstrating how discarded plastic waste can be repurposed into durable, functional infrastructure. These benches not only provide a much-needed amenity for public seating but also reinforce a broader narrative: that sustainable design and responsible consumption can go hand-in-hand in shaping future-ready cities.

The newly installed benches, known as Solid Plain Benches, are designed to seat three persons and measure 5 feet in length, 3 feet in depth, and 3 feet in height, with a sitting height of 17 inches. Each bench incorporates 32 plastic beams and weighs approximately 52 kilograms. They are supported by a robust base made
of Mild Steel (MS) pipe and anchored with four fastening holes for secure installation. Most notably, each bench is composed of 41 kilograms of recycled plastic derived from common single-use waste items like plastic bags and packaging films. By repurposing this waste into functional public seating, the project not only reduces plastic pollution but also highlights the potential of sustainable design in everyday urban settings.
“This project is more than just the installation of public seating,” said a senior official from IPSCDL. “It is a conscious step towards creating a model of sustainability, where waste is seen as a resource. We are making urban spaces not only more comfortable and inclusive but also environmentally responsible.”
Each bench symbolises a commitment to sustainability, a cleaner environment and forward-thinking public design. It also supports India’s broader objectives under the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) and Smart Cities Missions. Beyond providing practical seating, the benches are meant to spark awareness about plastic waste and promote responsible consumption habits among citizens.
IPSCDL envisions this as a model that can be replicated across the city, with future plans to expand similar installations in other public spaces.
