NIO GOA TO HOST NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ‘FOSSILS AS EARTH’S TIMEKEEPERS’ TO COMMEMORATE INSTITUTE’S DIAMOND JUBILEE

CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa, will host a national-level conference on the theme “Fossils as Earth’s Timekeepers’ to commemorate the institute’s Diamond Jubilee and the Platinum Jubilee of Palaentological Society of India (PSI) on its campus at Dona Paula from October 29 to 31, 2025.

The conference will bring together academicians, researchers, and students working in various branches of Palaeontology and Stratigraphy. The conference will feature engaging talks and lectures by renowned scientists, who will share the latest discoveries and major advancements in the field. The event will also have presentations showcasing the latest research and emerging perspectives in the field.

A large gathering of 300 delegates from various parts of the country are expected for the conference. The attendees of the inaugural function of the conference will include officials and experts from the field of earth sciences, oil and gas industry, students and research scholars.

The event will also be a platform for scientific discussions on some of the popular topics related to Palaeontology such as the past and future of monsoons, the chances of dinosaurs’ reappearance, chances of sea-level changes affecting coastal cities, the myths and realities about submerged Dwarka and Ramsetu, effectiveness of paleontology in pollution monitoring etc.

The PSI, established on January 26, 1950, is one of the oldest and most active scientific societies in the country. It has been at the forefront of advancing Palaeontological and Stratigraphic research in India through its lectures, awards, and the publication of the Journal of the Palaeontological Society of India. The society continues to promote excellence in the study of the Earth’s history through fossils.

The event will strengthen collaboration and knowledge exchange among the Earth scientists. It will be a tribute to the 75 years of the PSI’s enduring commitment to exploring the story of our planet through fossils.
