Students of Dhempe College of Arts & Science, Miramar, Panaji; were sensitised on Tobacco and Drug addiction by Dr. Shekhar Salkar, President of National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE), India, in the presence of Dr. Vrinda Pradip S.Borker, Principal, and other faculty members.

NOTE (India) has been organising the lecture series in educational institutions as part of awareness campaign against tobacco.

Dr. Salkar explained students about the various aspects of tobacco control in India and various health hazards caused by tobacco use, he urged the students to stay away from substance abuse and also be vigilant about friends and family members, who fall into the trap of addiction.

As per the recent Global Youth Tobacco survey done by WHO, the state of Goa is fairly well placed as far as tobacco consumption is concerned, however the youth are lured towards trend of ‘E-Cigarettes’ by tobacco industry and it has to be curbed.

In an online activity done by NOTE (India) on the group of participating students to access the impact of surrogate advertising done by tobacco companies, it was noted that a significant number of youngsters linked surrogate advertisements of paan-masala and mouth fresheners to tobacco products.

The lecture ended with a question and answer session, stated a press release issued by Dr Devdutta Sail, Secretary of NOTE India.
