Pradhan Mantri Divyansha Kendra (PMDK) initiative has significantly enhanced the lives of persons with disabilities by providing essential assistive devices. Under two new key schemes launched by the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, critical aids and appliances are being distributed in empowering beneficiaries to better navigate daily challenges.
A total of Rs. 84,64,312 worth of assistive products have been distributed so far under the assistance to Divyangjan (Persons with Disabilities) for purchase/fitting of aids/appliances (ADIP) scheme. This initiative has supported 621 individuals, that cover 343 males and 278 females. A total of 1044 beneficiaries have been provided with various aids and appliances till date.
State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Guruprasad Pawaskar stated: “Launched at the International Purple Fest Goa 2024, the Pradhan Mantri Divyansha Kendra (PMDK) initiative by the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities and Directorate of Social welfare has garnered significant response from persons with disabilities from Goa. This facility is crucial to ensure that every PwDs, has access to essential aids and appliances to lead a dignified and independent life.”
The ADIP scheme is inclusive, with no age or cost restrictions, ensuring all persons with disabilities have access to necessary aids and appliances which include assistive devices such as motorised devices like tricycles, wheelchairs, crutches, hearing aids and customised artificial limbs.
The second scheme, Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) specifically supports senior citizens above the age of 60. It provides Rs. 12,000 worth of assistive devices per person. The centre at GMC assists an average of 30 persons each day which highlights how the scheme has benefitted the weaker section of society at large in Goa.
“This initiative has been powered by the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), a non-profit organisation operating under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment,” said Dr. Shubham Pawar, who is in charge of this centre.
These schemes represent a vital step towards ensuring that every citizen, irrespective of their background, has the necessary tools to lead a dignified and independent life. The initiative has received tremendous support and appreciation from the Goan community, marking a significant achievement in supporting persons with disabilities and senior citizens.
