PANAJI: Dempo Sports Club and Churchill Brothers SC played out a goalless draw in the Goa Football Association Selvel Goa Professional League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Monday.
Despire having plenty of chances throughout the game, neither team were able to convert them into goals and they had to settle for a point at the final whistle.
Quan Gomes almost gave Churchill Bros a dream start when his side were awarded a free-kick just outside the box. The midfielder’s curling free-kick, which beat the wall and the goalkeeper, hit the crossbar and came back into the play.
The second half was much intense with both teams showing more urgency. In the 52nd minute, Dempo SC missed a glorious chance to take the lead when Aman Govekar wasted a chance from inside the box.
At the other end, Dempo keeper Dylan D’silva was there at the right place as Churchill Brothers’ Vinil Poojary’s shot from the left, was easily saved by the keeper.
In the 70th minute, Suraj ran down on the right flank and drilled a low cross to Velanco Rodrigues, however, with just the keeper at his mercy from within five yards from goal, the second-half substitute hit his shot over the bar.
Churchill Bros played a good brand of football, however, lacked the final touch. In the 84th minute, Dempo SC nearly struck the winner when Churchill Brothers defence allowed a lot of room and space for the Golden Eagles’ Necio Fernandes whose long-range shot narrowly missed the side post.
