Goa’s Kunbi fabric is renowned globally. The demand for the traditional Goan weave has also been the catalyst to spark interest amongst women to take up handloom for their financial empowerment.
With the help of the Department of Handicrafts, Textile, and Coir; the Surla Centre has so far seen women receiving skill training, equipping them with the necessary expertise to master the art of crafting the Kunbi weave.
Through the empowerment and development of the Kunbi Handloom Sector, Goa Government is fulfilling its vision to make Goa and Goan Women ‘Swayampurna’ while preserving the deep-rooted culture and heritage values of Goan traditional attire, promoting holistic growth of the community.
Whether it’s a festive occasion or a cultural celebration, the Kunbi saree will keep on reflecting the essence of Goa’s cultural tapestry!
Meanwhile, the Department of Handicrafts,Textile and Coir in collaboration with Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary, and College of Home Science celebrated the National Handloom Day at Sanskruti Bhavan, Pato-Panaji.
Certificates were distributed to the students and teachers of the vocational stream (Fashion Design and Making) for completing the weaving course during the job training.
