37TH NATIONAL GAMES: BHAVANI DEVI CLINCHES GOLD MEDAL, HARYANA’S YOGESHWAR SINGH EXCELS IN ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS

Olympian fencer Bhavani Devi of Tamil Nadu bagged the gold medal in women’s individual Sabre event at the 37th National Games Goa 2023 at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee stadium, at Taleigao Plateau on Thursday.

Bhavani Devi defeated S Soumiya 15-5 in the final. The talented Kerala fencer clinched silver medal while Ballouria Shiksha of Himachal Pradesh and Kaur Jagmeet of Punjab walked away with a bronze medal each.

Speaking to @LiveNewsGoaTV on the eve of the event, Bhavani Devi had revealed that her preparations have been good coming into the important competition like National Games and it will be followed by the Fencing World Cup in Algeria.

Elsewhere, men’s artistic gymnastics event saw a close contest with Haryana’s Yogeshwar Singh winning the gold medal with 76.75 points. UP’s Siddharth Verma (74.45) finished second while SSCB gymnast Gaurav Kumar clinched a bronze medal with 73.95 points at Peddem sports complex, Mapusa.

Maharashtra added four more gold medals to their tally in gymnastics winning the Women’s and Men’s Pair, Mixed Pair and Women’s Group in Acrobatic Gymnastics. SSCB won the other gold in Men’s group.

Pranati Nayak, who is now representing Odisha, won the gold in the women’s All-Round Individual which was held late yesterday. Pranati Das of West Bengal won the silver while Shraddha Talekar of Maharashtra won bronze.

In weightlifting at Campal sports village, Popy Hazarika of Assam lifted the gold medal in 59kg category women’s competition as her combined 191kg effort proved too much for Punjab’s Davinder Kaur (183kg) and M Deepanayomi of AP (180kg).

In the men’s 67 Kg category, Mizoram’s Lalhunthara lifted a total of 281 Kg to clinch the gold, edging out Subhash Lahre of SSCB by just a kilogram. Arunachal Pradesh’s Bengia Tani won bronze with a total lift of 277 Kg.

In the Women’s 64 Kg, Ditimoni Sonowal of Assam clinched the gold with a total lift of 200 Kg with S. Nirupama Devi of Manipur (195 kg) taking home the silver Jasveer Kaur of Punjab (186 kg) bagging the bronze.

N. Ajith of Tamil Nadu won the gold medal in 73 Kg Men’s category with a total lift of 290 Kg. Ranjeet Chavan of Maharashtra bagged the silver medal with a lift of 281 Kg and J. Koteswara Rao of Andhra Pradesh won the bronze.

In Netball Fast5 event, it was a mixed bag day for Goa as the men’s team registered a second successive win to assure themselves a semi-final spot. In the opening Pool A match, Goa defeated Uttar Pradesh 33-20 and then got the better of Rajasthan 40-28. The hosts women’s team, however, was knocked out after losing to Himachal Pradesh 24-15 and Kerala 26-24.

Over at the SAG Athletics Stadium at Bambolim, Goa suffered 0-30 loss to Bihar and 10-22 defeat to Kerala in women’s and men’s Rugby7s league matches respectively. Haryana and Odisha the top seeds in men’s and women’s event registered contracting victories on the day. While defending champion Haryana beat Odisha 17-10 in a relatively tight match, Odisha women blanked Kerala 25-0.

In the women’s event, Odisha blanked Karnataka 64-0 while Bihar reached the semis beating Delhi 53-0. In the third quarterfinal, West Bengal beat Kerala 27-7 to secure a place in the semis.

In the men’s category, Haryana beat Punjab 31-10, Odisha beat Bihar 19-14, Maharashtra beat Goa 22-0 and West Bengal beat Kerala 24-12 to book their places in the semi-finals.

In women’s 3×3 Basketball at Manohar Parikkar Indoor Stadium, Navelim; Telangana will face Madhya Pradesh while Delhi will face Chattisgarh in the semi-finals.

In the men’s category, Madhya Pradesh will take on Rajasthan while Delhi will be against Punjab for a place in the finals.
