Goa took their tally to 11 with the addition of a silver medal in Netball Fast5 event, two more bronze medals coming in Pencak Silat martial art and two in Modern Pentathlon to boost the confidence of the hosts contingent at the 37th National Games Goa 2023 in Panaji on Friday.
Winning medals on consecutive days has brought a great amount of cheer in the camp as the 37th National Games action heats up and will surely boost the overall morale of the players whose events are scheduled to take off in the coming days.
In the Netball Fast5 men’s competition at Manohar Parrikar sports complex-Campal, the hosts got the better of Karnataka 42-41 in the semi-final and sealed the final showdown against the favourites Haryana.
Haryana began aggressively and opened up a 12-3 lead in the first quarter. But Goa managed to pull things back with Sanmay Bandekar, scoring six points to help his team reduce the game to five points with the score reading 16-11 at half time.
The hosts continued their strong showing, intercepting Haryana’s passes to go into the fourth and final quarter trailing 18-20 and raised hopes of a possible upset. However, Haryana showed why they were such a formidable side as they scored 13 points in the final quarter to win comfortably 33-22 goals.
Over in Pencak Silat at Campal Sports Village, the hosts bagged bronze medals in Artistic Regu Male and Artistic Tunggal Female category.
The trio of Aley Da Silva, Pratik Nayak and Ryan Fernandes impressed with their performance in Regu to clinch bronze medal. In Artistic Tunggal female category, Heena Kausar of Goa also earned a bronze medal.
Over in Modern Pentathlon at Ponda Sports Complex, the pairing of Khushi Borkar-Suraj Velip bagged a bronze medal in Triathle Mixed Relay event with a timing of 23:42:17. In the Triathle men’s team event, Chandrahas Velip, Suraj Velip and Darshan Velip clinched a bronze medal.
MAHARASHTRA CONTINUE TO DOMINATE GYMNASTICS
Rhythmic gymnast Sanyuka Kale bagged her third gold medal and Rahil Pakhle clinched the women’s trampoline gold as Maharashtra continued their domination of the gymnastics at the Peddem Indoor Sports Complex, Mapusa.
Sanyuka, who had earlier won the rhythmic team and all-round gold medals, clinched the hoop gold with a total of 26.45 points with team-mate Nishika Kale making it a 1-2 for the state with a score of 23.45. Haryana’s Life Adlakha secured bronze with 23.35 points.
Maharashtra added another gold and silver to their tally when Rahi Pakhle finished on the top of the podium in Trampoline Gymnastics with a score of 43.88 points. Sejal Jadhav bagged the silver with 41.20 points and Kerala’s Anvitha Sachin won the bronze with a performance of 40.70 points.
In weightlifting competition at the Campal Sports Village, Nitek Jangid of Rajasthan clinched the first gold for his state in this edition of the National Games with a total lift of 317kg in the men’s 81kg event. Valluri Ajay Babu of Madhya Pradesh won the silver lifting 312 kg while Abhishek Nipane of Maharashtra won bronze with a total lift of 309 kg.
In the women’s 71 kg category, Punjab’s Harijinder Kaur lifted an aggregate weight of 201 kg on her way to securing the gold medal. Trupti Mane of Maharashtra finished a distant second with a total lift of 190 kg and Manipur’s P. Umeshwori Devi secured bronze with a total lift of 189kg.
In Fencing competition at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium, Punjab won the gold in women’s Sabre Team event. In the final, Kerala were leading 27-24, but an injury to Josna Christy Jose forced Kerala to forfeit the match and settle for the silver. Tamil Nadu and Haryana secured the bronze medals.
In 3×3 Basketball competition at Manohar Parrikar multipurpose indoor stadium at Navelim-South Goa, Delhi beat Punjab 21-13, Rajasthan beat MP 21-18, in men’s category. In women’s event, MP beat Telangana 22-8, Delhi beat Chhattisgarh 21-2.
