RG Stone Urology and Laparoscopy Hospitals, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing the state’s first HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) surgical procedure, states a press release. This pioneering surgery was performed on a 55-year-old woman with advanced ovarian cancer by a dedicated Surgical Oncology team led by Dr. Sachin Ambre (Consultant – Surgical Oncology), Dr. Hemant Parsekar, Consultant – Anaesthesia, and Dr. Nambiraj Konar, Sr. Consultant – Anaesthesia.
HIPEC is a highly specialised, cutting-edge surgical method used to treat tumours of the peritoneum, including advanced stages of ovarian cancer (stages 3 and 4), appendix cancer, mesothelioma, and certain stage 4 colon and stomach cancers. This complex technique has shown better patient survival rates and quality of life.
This procedure begins with the thorough removal of all disseminated tumour cells from the abdominal cavity, followed by the installation and maintenance of hot chemotherapy straight into the abdomen using specialised equipment for 60 to 90 minutes. The entire procedure may last between 8 to 24 hours. The patient, who was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer, reacted favourably to early chemotherapy and was able to have surgery within three months. The 12-hour procedure resulted in a quick recovery, and the patient was released within six days post-surgery.
Mr. Avinash Ojha, CEO & Managing Director, RG Hospitals, Goa expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the procedure, stating “This is a major achievement for RG Hospitals and the people of Goa! HIPEC is a highly specialized procedure not widely accessible across the country. By offering this advanced treatment, we are confident that it will significantly enhance the outcomes for our patients.”
Since HIPEC is an advanced treatment, its availability is limited in many regions of India. With its introduction in Goa, patients from the state and nearby regions no longer need to travel to metro cities for this specialized treatment.
Highlighting the successful HIPEC case, Dr. Anjum Mahabari, SBU Head, RG Hospitals, Goa, said “ The successful Hipec case at RG Hospitals, Goa, highlights the institution’s commitment to staying at the forefront of medical advancements and offering innovative treatment options to patients. It also reinforces the hospital’s position as a leading healthcare provider.”
As the RG Hospitals commemorate this achievement, they look forward to a time when patients will have easy access to outstanding medical procedures like HIPEC, which will guarantee the greatest possible outcomes and quality of life. They consistently push limits and reinvent healthcare standards since they are dedicated to offering Next-Gen Surgery Excellence. RG Hospitals aspires to be the driving force behind improvements in healthcare by offering unrivalled treatment and making a significant impact on communities’ well-being.
