The Directorate of Higher Education-Goa (DHE) & the Goa State Higher Education Council (GSHEC) in association with Indian School of Business (ISB), Mohali, Punjab conducted the 4th edition of Academic Leadership Programme (ALP) titled ‘Governance, Leadership and Transformation’ for 26 experienced faculty from various higher educational institutions in the state of Goa, from 1st to 5th April, 2024.
Imminent Professors, Trainers, Experts, TED-ex speakers delivered sessions, hands on activities and simulations, case studies, vivid presentations and discussions.
Dr. Arushi Jain, Policy Director-ISB, said the aim of the workshop is to strengthen the leadership skills of the faculty and excel the higher education leadership in the State of Goa. Prof. Niyan Marchon, Professor, Directorate of Higher Education and Coordinator of the ALP expressed that the ongoing ALP sessions will enrich the leadership skills of the faculty thereby transform the Higher educational ecosystem in the State of Goa. He thanked ISB, Mohali for partnering with the DHE & GSHEC, Goa.
Dr. Aarushi Jain, in her sessions briefed the participants about the computer simulation technique for decision-making with the help of an individual activity on leadership.
Vivek Atray, IAS (Retd.) conducted a session on ‘Inspired Leadership and effective internal communication’. He asked the participants to understand the requirements of stakeholders of higher educational institutions and to become team players.
Amarjeet Sinha, IAS (Retd.) conducted a session on ‘Why Leadership Matters’. He discussed the landscape of higher education in India. He touched upon the various key areas in higher education. Prof. Rajeshwar Upadhyay, Director-Par Excellence, conducted sessions on ‘Emotional Intelligence’. Prof. Upadhyay explained the framework of emotional intelligence and importance of conflict resolution by promoting open communication. He informed the faculty to identify their strength and areas for development focusing on the core competencies.
The third day of the workshop began with the session by Prof. Anjal Prakash, Research Director, ISB on the topic ‘ Leadership Lesson from Ancient Indian Texts.’. Prof. Anjal narrated 12 lessons from ancient Indian scriptures relating to leadership and governance. The faculty in teams were encoured to draft the vision and SWOC for their educational institution.
Prof. S. Ramnarayan-ISB, conducted a session on ‘Leadership and change management’. He informed the participants that leadership is a responsibility and the leader’s role lies in shifting people from fear and anxiety to hope.
On the last day of the workshop, Prof. S. Ramnarayan conducted sessions on ‘Change management using computer simulation’ using case studies. Prof. demonstrated the usage of computer simulation in dealing with uncertain situations at managerial level. He informed the participants that in computer simulation one realises how a human mind deals with various uncertain situations. He said that a leader should take utmost care while choosing the problem and implementing its solution. He stated that the strategies without capabilities are meaningless and advised the participants to strengthen their capabilities.
At the last session, Dr. Aarushi Jain, Policy Director-ISB, spoke about ‘Ethics in Public Policy’. She explained the various dimensions of ethics, explained the ten core values in human life and that values are the buildings blocks for ethics
The ALP-4 workshop ended with a valedictory session function where in participants expressed their gratitude to the organising team of ISB for curating excellent topics for the workshop.
Dr. Aarushi Jain praised the college faculty from Goa for their talent and involvement at the workshop. The certificates of completion for the five day workshop were awarded to all the participants at the hands of the Policy Director of ISB. Prof. Niyan Marchon, Coordinator of the ALP also proposed the vote of thanks on behalf of the Directorate of Higher Education, Goa.
