Rotary Club of Dona Paula recently held an enlightening session at the Government High School of Dona Paula with renowned food influencer Revant Himatsingka, popularly known as Foodpharmer. The event aimed to educate students on the critical importance of reading food labels and understanding the high sugar content in various food items.
Revant Himatsingka, a prominent figure in the field of nutrition and health awareness, has made significant strides in educating the public about the deceptive marketing practices of food companies. His mission is to help consumers make informed choices by understanding the nutritional information on food labels. Himatsingka, has become a viral sensation through his efforts to reveal the truth behind many packaged foods that claim to be healthy but are laden with sugar and other unhealthy ingredients
During the session, Himatsingka engaged with the students, emphasizing the importance of being mindful of what they consume. He illustrated how products like aerated drinks contain alarmingly high amounts of sugar, which can lead to various health issues, including obesity and diabetes. To drive the message home, the children created “sugar boards,” visual displays showing the sugar content in popular beverages. These boards were then posted in the school to serve as a constant reminder of the hidden sugars in everyday drinks.
“The initiative to educate children about reading food labels is crucial,” said Revant Himatsingka. “Understanding what we eat is the first step towards a healthier life. If children learn this skill early, they can make better food choices and avoid the health risks associated with high sugar intake.”
Rotary Club of Dona Paula’s President, Rtn Gaurav Kenkre said: “His work in raising awareness about food nutrition is commendable, and we believe that educating our young minds about these issues is essential for building a healthier future.”
The interactive session was not just about learning; it was also about engaging the students in a hands-on activity that would leave a lasting impact. By creating the sugar boards, the students could visually grasp the concept of sugar content, making the learning experience both fun and informative.
“Creating awareness is just the beginning,” added Himatsingka. “Our goal is to see real changes in how food is marketed and consumed in India. The support from organisations like the Rotary Club of Dona Paula is invaluable in this mission.”
