100 PER CENT LITERACY TARGET FOR GOA BY END OF YEAR 2024

Goa is targeting 100 per cent literacy by the the end of the Year 2024. The literacy drive had started in year 2023 when central Ministry of Education launched New India Literacy Programme (NILP).

The process involved identification of illiterates (15 years and older) and training is conducted via Resource Adult Trainee Coordinators appointed for said purpose throughout the State. The floating population is not targeted in this literacy drive.

Till date Goa has identified 3000 illiterates (with the help of educational institutes) out of which total 729 have been declared as literates after the classes and tests being conducted at various places in various phases. The results of 1289 learners appeared for the test are awaited.

Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant has been taking review of the entire drive. Directorate of Panchayat, Directorate of Municipal Administration, Directorate of Social Welfare, Directorate of Planning and Statistics were involved in the literacy drive. Accordingly local bodies have also identified illiterates and submitted the data of 1001 people to be trained. The said process has also started.

Since the NILP scheme is voluntary scheme, the State administration has requested the public to identify such illiterate who is willing to learn and share the information with SCERT at contact number 8010945237/9552265759, states a press communique.
