I-LEAGUE 2: UNITED SC EDGE PAST SPORTING DESPITE SPIRITED SECOND-HALF DISPLAY AT BAMBOLIM

Sporting Clube de Goa began their I-League 2 campaign with a hard-fought 0-1 defeat against United SC on Saturday. Despite a spirited second-half comeback attempt and several professional debuts for the Flaming Oranje, a late first-half strike from United’s Amil Naim proved to be the difference at the final whistle.

The decisive moment arrived in the 42nd minute when Naim found space from a tight left angle to slot the ball past Sporting’s debutant goalkeeper, Avilash Paul. Paul had previously kept the side level with a sharp save against Sumay Shome just moments earlier and a strong punch-out from an early 5th-minute corner to deny the visitors an opening.

Sporting’s debut-heavy lineup showed immediate intent in the first half. In the 10th minute, Ngangbam Naocha Singh combined with debutant Jerry Pulamte, forcing a defensive clearance from United’s Ankan Bhattacharjee. The resulting corner, delivered by Ragav Gupta on his Sporting debut, found the head of defender Joshua Rae, whose effort narrowly missed the target.

The match saw a high physical intensity, with the referee cautioning Sporting defenders Niraj Parekh and Joshua Rae following mistimed challenges during quick transitions. United SC also saw Bickey Thapa cautioned for a foul on Gupta as both sides battled for midfield supremacy throughout the first period.

The second half saw Dattaraj Gaonkar deliver a pinpoint cross to substitute Robi Hansda in the 61st minute, whose header rose just over the crossbar. Hansda remained a threat, later turning provider for Alister Anthony, but the debutant’s headed effort couldn’t find the back of the net.
In the closing stages, Rohan Rodrigues saw a powerful strike rise over the woodwork, while Umair Syed nearly snatched a point in the 93rd minute, only for his shot to ripple the side netting. While the result favors United SC, the Oranje will look to build on this resilient performance as the campaign progresses.

Sporting clube de Goa will next be seen playing an away match against Neroca FC at the Khuman Lampak Stadium on April 3.
