India’s historic run in the women’s doubles at the BWF World Championships came to an end as unseeded pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand suffered a heart-wrenching defeat against top seeds Tan Ning and Liu Shengshu of China in a thrilling semi-final clash today.
Despite taking the opening game, the Indian duo went down 21-18, 13-21, 8-21. After taking initial command of the match, Treesa and Gayatri were unable to stop a fierce comeback from the World No. 1 Chinese pair, who dominated the final two games to secure their spot in the final.
Despite the loss, the Indian duo leaves with their heads held high with a historic bronze medal, India’s first women’s doubles World Championship medal in 15 years, breaking a long drought that dated back to Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa’s bronze in 2011.
