Maharashtra emerged the champions while Rajasthan finished runners-up at the 37th West Zone Junior Athletics Championship organised by Goa Athletic Association under the aegis of Athletics Federation of India in association with Sports Authority of Goa at Atal Stadium, Bambolim.
The three-day zonal championship, which had a participation of around 800 athletes; concluded on Tuesday with Maharashtra clinching 30 gold, 19 silver and 8 bronze medals. Rajasthan bagged 10 medals less than the toppers in a total of 47, which included 22 gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze medals. Gujarat finished 3rd with 56 medals including 13 gold medals and 18 silver medals.
Hosts Goa, who came in for lavish praise by one and all for immaculate organisation of the prestigious zonal championship, also impressed on the field with its strong contingent of over 120 athletes delivering 36 medals – which comprised 6 gold, 10 silver and 20 bronze medals.
