PANAJI: Reigning champion Devesh Anand Naik registered a hat-trick of triumphs, winning the Late Venkatesh and Sumati Shanbag Memorial Chess 2022 organised by MTCA under the aegis of Goa Ad-hoc Committee at St.Thresa’s High School Hall, Mangor Hill, Vasco. He took home the enormous rolling trophy for his consistent winning display. In all, 117 participants from all over Goa participated in the tournament.
Devesh was in the sole lead by half a point ahead of Joy Kakodkar after the penultimate round and needed just another half a point, in the crucial round to clinch the title.
After Joy Kakodkar could only manage a draw in the decisive round against the leader, Devesh walked away with the title to register a hat-trick with 7 wins and 2 draws, scoring 8 points from 9 rounds.
Reuben Colaco on the second board got the better of Sairudra Nagvekar to finish in the second position with 7.5 points. Joy and Parth Salvi also with 7.5 points, had to settle for the 3rd and 4th place respectively due to their lower tie-break score.
AIM Vaz Ethan, Asmita Ray and Tanad Bandodkar scored 7 points each to finish on 5th, 6th, 7th place accordingly. Vivaan Ballikar, Kambli Datta, Nagvekar Sairudra scored 6.5 to occupy the 8th, 9th, 10th position. The 11th to 20th positions belonged to AFM Vaz Edrick, Lad Mandar Pradip, Kambli Datta , Anish Naik, Aarth Siddesh Shenvi Karapurkar, Sanjil Hoble, Varad Dasharath Nagvekar, Saksham Paresh Natekar, Tejas R Shet Vernekar, Nagvekar Harsh Dasharath.
