PANAJI: Moses Mascarenhas and Rutuja Gujar proved to be the fastest man and woman respectively at the 1st Mini-State Athletic Championship organised by Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) in collaboration with the Goa Athletic Association recently at Athletic Stadium, Bambolim.
Over 500 athletes from all over Goa, took part in the state-level competitive athletic event held after a gap of 2 years.
A press statement by the SAG said: “Many young athletes performed outstandingly well during the event. New talents identified at the meet, will be invited to enroll at the regular coaching centres of SAG all over the state for further training and nurturing.”
In the showcase 100m sprint events, Moses Mascarenhas clocked 11.1 seconds to bag the gold medal in men’s category; while Rutuja Gujar excelled in the women’s section in 14.0 seconds.
In a close finish, Joyel Jhonson (11.1s) took the silver medal while Hrutvej Parab (11.2s) was third. Over in the women’s category, Jocelyn Carvalho (14.5s) clinched the silver medal while Sonali Malik (14.6s) bagged the bronze medal.
Elsewhere, Teddy Cardozo reigned supreme in the 5000m run, clocking 16:41:9 min. In the Long Jump event, Anantha Krishnan walked away with the gold medal with a leap of 7.12m.
In the women’s shot-put action, Sheral Dmello topped the chart with a margin of over two metres, with a mighty 10.04m hurl. Shipali Naik (2:49:54) won the women’s 800m run.
Ashraf Pandial, SAG Treasurer, Paresh Kamat, GAA Secretary, Gurudas Sawant, Jt-Secretary GAA, Baptist Dsouza, Senior AFI official, graced the occasion.
