For millions of Indians, football is more than a sport. It is a part of everyday life, followed across generations and woven into the dreams of children who grow up watching their favourite players on television and imagining themselves one day stepping onto the same pitch. For a group of young football enthusiasts in Kolkata on Saturday that dream came a little closer to reality.
Ahead of the much-awaited India-Brazil international friendly at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, the young child mascots who accompanied the players onto the field experienced a moment they are unlikely to forget. Walking alongside some of the biggest names in world football, the children found themselves at the centre of an occasion they had previously only imagined.
For them, the 90 minutes of football represented much more than a match. It was a memory, an inspiration and, for some, perhaps the beginning of a bigger dream whether that is to become a footballer, a match presenter or simply remain connected with the sport they love.
Among those fortunate to experience the moment was Saahith Palanivel from Adyar Theosophical Academy, Chennai. Travelling all the way from Kerala, Saahith is a huge admirer of Brazil and, in particular, Vinícius Júnior.
His much-anticipated encounter with his idol turned into a remarkably simple but unforgettable moment. As Saahith approached Vinícius, the Brazilian star responded with a warm “Hi”.
For a young fan who had grown up watching his favourite player from afar, those few seconds were enough to make the occasion feel surreal.
Amid thousands of supporters and the grandeur surrounding the India-Brazil encounter, it was that small exchange that became Saahith’s most treasured memory.
The brief exchange may have lasted only a few seconds, but its significance was far greater for Saahith. In a stadium filled with thousands of supporters, a simple greeting from his favourite player turned into a personal moment that gave the young fan a story to carry long after the final whistle.
The experience was made possible through the significant contribution of AIFF, whose efforts helped create a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these young football enthusiasts. Walking out with players they had watched from afar brought them closer to the sport’s biggest stage and, perhaps, planted the belief that their own football journeys could one day lead them there.
