ESG’S CINEPHILE FILM CLUB TO RESUME SCREENINGS ON DEC 23 WITH ‘THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH’

PANAJI: Goa’s most popular and vibrant film club is back in action. The Cinephile Film Club of the Entertainment Society of Goa will resume its weekly screenings at Maquinez Palace, from 23rd December at 6.30 pm. The Alfred Hitchcock classic, ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)’ starring James Stewart and Doris Day, featuring the evergreen song ‘Que sera sera’, will be screened.

Till March 2020, the Cinephile Film Club was hosting weekly screenings of Indian and foreign. Apart from the regular screenings, the film club has also hosted festivals like the European film festival, National award-winning film festival among others, as a part of its calendar events.

In the past, the club has held retrospectives of renowned filmmakers like Sai Paranjpye, Sumitra Bhave, and Girish Kasaravalli, by inviting them to the film club where they spoke about their films. The club has also screened films like Aligarh in the presence of writer/editor Apurva Asrani, Ganashatru and Akaler Shandaney, in the presence of the legendary actor Dhritiman Chatterjee, who has worked with master filmmakers like Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen.  Some other programs held by the film club include a retrospective of Madan Mohan’s music and Shailendra’s song, which was an absolute treat for film and music lovers.

Under the aegis of the Cinephile film club, the Entertainment Society of Goa has also conducted various other activities like a Film Journalism workshop with film critic Rajeev Masand and a Film Appreciation course with the FTII faculty.

The film club has its screenings at Maquinez Palace, a 200 plus seater auditorium, with a state-of-the-art projection and sound, and a mix of Indian and foreign films are screened, every Thursday at 6.30 pm.

The film club, curated by film critic Sachin Chatte, has also lined up special screenings with filmmakers and other film personalities, in the near future.

The Vice-Chairman of the Entertainment Society of Goa, Subhash Phaldesai said: “We are delighted to resume the Cinephile screenings and bring the best of cinema to the Goan audiences. At ESG, we have endeavoured to promote culture and cinema and for the locals, the Cinephile film club plays a pivotal role in the promotion of quality films and other ancillary activities.”    

The screening of ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’ on 23rd December at 6.30 pm will be free and open to all on a first come first served basis and following all the SOP’s laid down by the government.
