The inaugural Vivekananda Angel Award (VAA) was conferred on Rudolf Schwartz from Germany, at Porvorim on Friday. Ethernet Foundation has instituted VAA to recognise the contribution of charitable personalities who serve the underserved.
State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Guruprasad Pawaskar was the chief guest. Chairman of Ethernet Foundation, Sagar Govekar; Project co-ordinator Pravin Sabnis and other dignitaries were also present.
Rudolf Schwartz, who first visited Goa on first visit to India in 1990, has rendered yeoman service to provide education to poor students, who wanted to study but their parents were unable to afford that. The former German bank manager raised finances from sponsors based in Germany and funded a number of students to achieve choicest of careers including doctor and engineers among others.
Apart from support to needy intelligent students to take professional degree courses, Schwartz also played monumental role in setting up technical education institutes.He launched Bhumika Technical Institute in Paliem in 1995 and followed it with Keerti Vidyalaya Technical Institute at Siolim in 1997, while Home Nursing Bureau started in 2005.
Indian Students Educational Aid Foundation has sponsored education of over 3000 students over last 30 years.
