Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs (DSYA), in coordination with the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG), began the three-day National Sports Day 2026 celebrations across Goa on Friday, August 28, 2026, commemorating the birth anniversary of legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.
The celebrations, being held from August 28 to 30, are based on the central theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat”, with the key pillars of Tribute, Play and Move.
The first day, August 28, themed ‘Tribute’, commenced at 9:00 AM with a colourful walkathon rally with sports-themed placards. Students from schools across Tiswadi Taluka participated enthusiastically in the rally.
The walkathon started from Miramar Beach and proceeded towards the Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium, Campal. Students carried placards displaying messages promoting sports, fitness and an active lifestyle, creating an energetic atmosphere along the route.
The rally was flagged off by Dr. Vivek Pawar, Deputy Director of Sports, in the presence of officers and officials of the DSYA and SAG.
The walkathon was organised as a fitting tribute to Major Dhyan Chand and aimed at inspiring the younger generation to embrace sports and physical activity. The enthusiastic participation of school students reflected the growing importance of sports and fitness among Goa’s youth.
National Sports Day celebrations will feature various sporting and physical activity programmes across the state, bringing together students, sportspersons, government employees and the community under the spirit of “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat.”
