The much-awaited Goa Carnaval 2026 commenced on a vibrant note this evening with a spectacular curtain raiser held at Porvorim, setting the tone for five days of colour, music, and celebration across the state.

The carnaval parade was flagged off by Tourism Minister and local MLA Rohan A. Khaunte in the presence of GTDC Chairman Kedar J Naik; Director Tourism Kedar Naik; MD, GTDC Kuldeep Arolkar; Assistant Director, Department of Tourism, Jayesh Kankonkar; Assistant Tourist Officer, Chitra Vengurlekar and others.

The highlight of the evening was the ceremonial proclamation by King Momo, Cedric Da Costa, leading the parade in a traditional manner on a bullock cart, calling upon everyone to celebrate with joy, unity, and responsibility, echoing this year’s vibrant spirit of togetherness.

“Introduced in the 18th century, Carnaval found renewed life in 1965 through the efforts of musician Timoteo Fernandes, during whose time King Momo first arrived on a traditional bullock cart. Today in Porvorim, those nostalgic moments came alive once again when King Momo led the parade in a traditional bullock cart, reminiscent of the earlier celebrations, rather than the large, elaborate floats commonly seen in recent years.  This revival of tradition offers people an opportunity to reconnect with their cultural roots, while allowing the younger generation to experience, appreciate, and carry forward the legacy of Carnaval in its original essence,” stated Khaunte.

He further added, “I truly cherish Carnaval for the sense of community it represents. We speak of communal harmony, and we celebrate together as one. However, this year’s Carnaval has been organised with certain restrictions in place due to the flyover and traffic regulations. These measures have been adopted with due respect for commuters and residents along this route, so that the celebrations can take place in a responsible and orderly manner. Today, there is singing, clapping, dancing and music. At the same time, there are no large vehicles, no big floats and no fuel-driven processions. This Carnaval has been initiated in a sustainable and environmentally conscious manner.”

Kedar J Naik stated, “Carnaval is a celebration that reflects Goa’s distinctive cultural journey, shaped by centuries of rich traditions and global influences that have seamlessly blended into our local way of life. It is a time when people from all communities come together to celebrate with joy, music, creativity, and colour. Through the grand floats, lively performances, and participation across cities and villages, Carnaval showcases the many shades of Goa’s cultural heritage.”

Director of Tourism, Kedar Naik, added, “This evening sets the rhythm for the celebrations that will unfold over the next few days. Goa Carnaval 2026 reflects a collaborative effort between government, local committees, artists, and communities to deliver a joyful and well-managed festival.”

Organised by the Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, in collaboration with Porvorim Carnaval Committee; the opening evening brought together residents, artists, performers, and visitors in a lively display of Goan culture and festive spirit. Porvorim witnessed enthusiastic participation from local cultural groups and performers, creating an atmosphere filled with music, colour, and excitement. The celebration was consciously designed as a sustainable and environmentally responsible event, with no fuel-driven vehicles and no large mechanised floats, placing the focus firmly on tradition, community participation, music, and cultural expression. The evening served as a fitting prelude to the grand parade scheduled in Panaji tomorrow, where the ceremonial float procession will officially roll out amidst much fanfare.

With celebrations set to continue across Panaji on 14th February, Margao on 15th February, Vasco on 16th February and Mapusa, & Morjim on 17th February over the coming days, Goa is poised to experience one of its most cherished cultural festivals in full splendour.
