GOA TOURISM ORGANISES INTER-SCHOOL QUIZ COMPETITION TO PROMOTE ‘GOA BEYOND BEACHES & HINTERLAND TOURISM’

Goa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. (GTDC) organised an Inter-School Quiz Competition under the tagline “Goa Beyond Beaches” for students of Dharbandora Taluka, marking a significant initiative to promote hinterland tourism and engage the youth in meaningful discussions about the state’s diverse offerings.

The event witnessed participation from seven high schools: Matoshri Anandibai Vaman Marathe Vidyamandir, Dharbandora, Smt. Hirabai Talaolikar High School, Sancorda, Dharbandora, Abhinav Vidya Mandir, Mollem, Dharbandora, Somnath English High School, Savargal, Dharbandora, Government High School, Dayanandnagar, Dharbandora, Sacordem Education Society’s School, Sacordem, Dharbandora; and Barabhumi High School, Tamdi Surla, Sancordem. 1st Prize was awarded to Abhinav Vidya Mandir, Mollem, Dharbandora, while 2nd Prize went to Government High School, Dayanandnagar, Dharbandora, 3rd Prize to Matoshri Anandibai Vaman Marathe Vidyamandir, Dharbandora, 4th Prize to Barabhumi High School, Tamdi Surla- Sanvordem and 5th Prize to Sanvordem Education Society’s School – Sacordem, Dharbandora.

The competition was graced by Dr. Ganesh Gaonkar, Sanvordem Constituncy MLA & Chairman GTDC along with General Manager Marketing GTDC, Gavin Dias, Deputy General Manager Marketing, Deepak Narvekar, Diago Fernandes, and Sanvordem Sarpanch, Bilaji Gawas. Renowned quiz master Nagush Sardesai conducted the quiz.

“Exploring Goa beyond its renowned beaches is essential, as the hinterlands boast attractions like Dudhsagar Falls, Tambdi Surla Waterfall, and Satpal Arboretum, along with many other facets of Dharbandora Taluka. I encourage students to prepare diligently for competitive exams, as well as to consider the multi-faculty college in Dharbandora. Competitions like these not only enhance students’ IQ but also equip them with vital information about tourism in Goa,” stated Dr. Gaonkar.

Gavin Dias spoke about sustainable tourism and guided students on the principles of regenerative tourism, emphasising the environmental challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. “Tourism is not just about visiting beautiful places; it is about fostering a deep connection with nature and culture. As we delve into the essence of regenerative tourism, we must acknowledge the environmental challenges we face. Each one of you must adopt a mindset that prioritises sustainability and regeneration. Whether it’s through responsible travel choices, or participating in conservation efforts, every action counts.”

Deputy General Manager Marketing, Narvekar, in his welcome address, congratulated the schools management for their efforts in sending students to the competition. “Today, as we gather to celebrate the achievements of our students, I want to take a moment to reiterate the vision of Goa Beyond Beaches by our Tourism Minister, Rohan Khaunte, and our esteemed Chairman, Dr. Ganesh Gaonkar. Their vision is clear: to promote Goa as a destination that extends far beyond its picturesque beaches. We have so much more to offer—rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and unique experiences that await discovery in our hinterlands.”

This competition focuses on tourism within the Dharbandora taluka and tourist attractions in the area. This initiative marks a vital step towards promoting hinterland tourism and enhancing students’ awareness of Goa’s diverse cultural and natural heritage. GTDC is committed to organising more tourism-related competitions in the near future for schools and higher secondary institutions across Goa.
