GOA’S SHER BAHADUR CLINCHES SILVER MEDAL IN WUSHU, HOSTS’ SAILORS OFF TO A GOOD START

Sher Bahadur added a silver medal to Goa’s tally in Wushu to take the state’s tally to 48 medals in the 37th National Games at the Campal Games village on Saturday.

Sher Bahadur finished second in Taulo Nangun category with a total score of 8.85 behind Manipur’s Yurembam Bonish. Prashant Manhas of Himachal Pradesh took home the bronze.

This is Goa’s third medal in Wushu. The host state had already won one silver and one bronze in the first two days of competition.

Goa is currently in 11th position in the medals tally with 10 gold, 12 silver and 26 bronze.

Elsewhere in boxing, Goa’s Aakash Gorkha defeated Manipur’s Rohit Ningehougan 5-0 in Light Welter Weight category to advance to the next round.

In Yachting at Hawaii beach, Goans got off to a good start with Dayne Coelho and Pearl Colvalcar in first position. Katya Coelho, Adhvait and Vijay are in second position while Shivani is in 4th position.

Over in handball at Manohar Parrikar multipurpose indoor stadium at Navelim-South, Goa men went down to Services while Himachal Pradesh beat Goa women in the first round of the group stage outings.

SPORTS MINISTER PROMISES GRAND CLOSING CEREMONY

Sports Minister Govind Gaude announced that there would be a grand closing ceremony for the National Games that includes a cultural programme and a formal function that will be attended by the Vice-President of India Jagdeep Dhankar.

Speaking to reporters, Gaude said that the National Games so far have proven to be a huge success, just like he promised they would be.

“10,040 athletes have registered for the Games, which is exactly the number that we said would come and that we promised would be here. Everyone is satisfied with the atmosphere of the games and the quality of the infrastructure. If you go to see around the venues there is a festive atmosphere which is not too dissimilar to the Olympics,” Gaude said.

“We are making all arrangements for the closing ceremony which will be held on November 9. By 12pm on November 9 all the disciplines and all the events will have been completed and the stage will be set for the closing ceremony,” he said.
