Department of Physical Education and Sports of St. Joseph Vaz College and St. Joseph Vaz Institute of Education, Cortalim, organised ‘Healthily-A lecture series on Health, Exercise and Wellness’ for the students and staff of B.Sc and D.El.Ed during the academic year 2022-23.
The objective of this lecture series is to promote a healthy lifestyle among the students and staff. In total 5 lectures on various health related topics were organized. The first lecture was on the topic ‘Pranayama and meditation’ and the resource person was Sachin Parsekar, Assistant Professor in Physical Education at Don Bosco College Panaji.
In his lecture, Sachin spoke different types of pranayama and also demonstrated the same. He also spoke about meditation and emphasized on the techniques of meditation.
In the second lecture, Dr Diksha Arlekar a homeopathic doctor by profession talked about Common Yoga Protocol. In her lecture, Dr Diksha emphasised on yoga as a whole, eating right, satvik diet, pranayama, different types of asanas, importance of yoga to relieve stress and meditation.
Lecture three was delivered by Dr Ajinkya Kudtarkar, College Director of Physical Education and Sports at Damodar College Margao. Dr. Kudtarkar highlighted about importance of nutrition and balanced diet and the emphasis of the two similar yet different topics.
Dr Ajith Gopi, Assistant Professor in Physical Education at Don Bosco College Panaji in his lecture on ‘Sweat the stress away: A surprising link between exercise and stress’ gave insights on how India is struggling with so many illnesses and diseases and one of the main cause is stress.
Dr Ajith broke down the complexity of stress and informed that good sleep and following healthy habits is essential.
The final lecture was delivered by Dr Noela Correia, former Medical Officer at PHC Curtorim and GMC Bambolim on the topic First Aid in Road Accidents.
Dr Noela spoke about DRS ABC in first aid which stands for ‘Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR.’ She concluded the session by answering all the questions that the students and the staff had. She highlighted that many lives can be saved if first aid reaches them in time and in correct manner.
