Sporting Clube de Goa travel to the Padukone-Dravid CSE Arena 1 on May 8 for a significant I-League 2 encounter against FC Bengaluru United. Following their historic third consecutive Goa Professional League title and a recent 2-1 win over GMSC, the Flaming Oranje enter the final phase of the league with their sights set on securing a top-two finish in the standings.
The fixture serves as a critical junction in the table. FC Bengaluru United currently occupies the second spot with 11 points from six matches, while Sporting Goa follows closely in fourth with 10 points. A victory on the road would see the Goan side move ahead of their hosts and potentially into a qualifying position for the I-League.
Sporting’s campaign has been anchored by defensive consistency, having conceded only five goals in six outings. The team has benefited from a balanced attack; forward Alister Anthony continues to lead the line, while midfielder Joyson Gauncar and Ngangbam Naocha Singh have both been instrumental in finding the net during recent fixtures to keep the club in contention.
Assistant-Coach Savio Vaz expressed confidence in the squad’s focus for the final stretch. “With the last two matches remaining, we will give our absolute best to ensure we finish in the top two spots,” Vaz stated. “The momentum from our GPL success is high, and the players are committed to maintaining that professional standard to ensure Sporting returns to the higher divisions of Indian football.”
The match is scheduled for a 4:00 PM IST kick-off. Following the trip to Bengaluru, Sporting will return to the Bambolim Stadium next week for their final league fixture.
