Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant inaugurated Mayem Biodiversity Atlas – India’s First Village Atlas at Mayem on Wednesday. Mayem MLA, Premendra Vishnu Shet and GSBB Member Secretary, Dr.Pradip V. Sarmokadam were also present among others.

Dr Sawant also declared that the government endeavours to embark on similar projects of registering the biodiversity of ‘revenue villages’ across all 191 village panchayats in the State. He also added that ‘GoVan’ food processing centres will be started at Pilgao and Mayem. A research project related to a variety of cows, will be sanctioned as the GSBB undertaking.

“If we are able to do the Biodiversity Atlas of all such villages, we will be the No 1 state to achieve this feat in India,” stated the Chief Minister.

While calling on the people to give attention to nature and help preserve the ecology of the villages by adopting the approach that our ancestors had, Dr Sawant remarked that people today are seen putting their selfish interest before the essentials of a balanced ecosystem.

“When a biodiversity of a region is registered, then there are two advantages of this step, apart from the help it gives in studying the effect of Climate Change. Importantly, it leads to experts from other parts of the country visiting your village. Hence, you must strive to conserve the biodiversity of your region. The Union government also gives financial aid to develop and conserve the natural resources like lakes as well,” said the Chief Minister while addressing the gathering.

The Socio-Cultural history of Mayem dates back to 12th century. Older generation of Mayem has been instrumental in preserving, protecting this diversity, now younger generation shall take the tradition forward with the Biodiversity Management Committee of Mayem-Vainguinim with scientific support of Arannya Environment Research Organisation, further tweeted the CM.
