NEP 2020: ROADMAP FOR IMPLEMENTATION AT SECONDARY STAGE (CLASS IX) IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2024-2025

Government of Goa’s Secretary Education, Prasad Lolyekar (IAS) chaired a meeting with heads of institutions regarding implementation of NEP.  Shailesh Zingde, Director, Education; Bhagirath Shetye, Chairman – GBSHSE; Dr. Shambhu Ghadi, State Project Director, GSS; Meghana Shetgaonkar (Director, SCERT); Kanta Patnekar (Chairman, Steering Committee for NEP Implementation at School Education); and Jose Rebello (Chairman, State Curriculum Framework Committee for Secondary Stage; were also present.

With the stage set for NEP 2020 implementation at Secondary Stage (Class IX) for the Academic Year 2024-2025, Lolyekar, explained various aspects in the Press briefing.

• As per NEP-2020, School Education consists of four stages; Foundational
Stage (Nursery to II), Preparatory Stage (III to V), Middle Stage (VI to
VIII) & Secondary Stage (IX to XII)
• NEP-2020 was implemented at Foundational Stage – I in the year 2023-
2024, this year it is also implemented at Foundational Stage – II and also
at Secondary Stage (Class-IX)
• There are 10 Curricular Areas: Three Languages (R1, R2 & R3), Science,
Mathematics & Computational Thinking, Social-Science & Humanities,
Inter-Disciplinary Areas, Art Education, Physical Education & Vocational
Education
• Languages: R1 (English), R2 (Konkani or Marathi or Hindi), R3 (Any
Language native to India presently offered by Goa Board including
Konkani/Marathi/Hindi if not opted at R2)
• Relaxation in R3 will be granted for any language offered by Goa Board
including foreign languages like French, Portuguese, German and Arabic
for those students that have opted this language at Class VIII
• Focus is on Mapping of the existing syllabus with the Curricular Goals,
Competencies & Learning Outcomes as per the NCF-2023 for the
Languages, Mathematics, Science & Social-Science
• Inter-Disciplinary Area will include: Environmental Education, Road
Safety & Awareness, Financial Literacy, Electoral Literacy & General
Laws, Scouts & Guides, JRC, NCC, Social Service. For First Semester:
Environment Education – will have (2 Credit). Second Semester: Financial
Literacy, Road Safety & Electoral Literacy & General Laws (1 Credit) And
Scouts & Guides/ JRC/ NCC/ Social Service (1 Credit)
• Vocational Education will include: 15 NSQF Sectors. Existing Computer
Subject will be converted in to NSQF
• Physical Education will include: Physical Education &Well-being, Yoga
• Art Education will include: Fine Art, Theatre Art, Music & Performing Art
• There will be a Semester Pattern of Examination in all Curricular Areas:
Two Semesters
• For External Assessment, paper will be set by Goa Board. However,
Assessment will have to be done by the teachers at School and upload the
marks on Goa Board Portal
• Total Instructional hours in all Curricular Areas will be 600 hours per
Semester/1200 hours per year i.e. 39 hour/Week.
• Internal Assessment will be done at School by teachers using HPC
(Holistic Progress Card)
• Training will be provided to all teachers on Internal Assessment (How to
use Holistic Progress Card)
• Teachers wherever required will be given to the schools on lecture basis
• There will be Extended Instructional Hours. Schools are given three model
time-table with a liberty to implement keeping the instructional hours same
• About CWSN students: The Scheme of subjects shall be modified as per
the instructions issued by the Goa Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary
Education from time-to-time
• Heads of the Institutions are apprised about the NEP-2020 implementation
• For effective implementation of the NEP-2020 and in order to address
School specific issues Secretary Education has scheduled taluka level visits
and interaction with Management & PTA
• Further, follow-up meetings will be held with all stakeholders periodically
