PURPLE FEST TO SERVE AS GLOBAL IDEAS EXCHANGE FORUM & CRUCIAL PLATFORM TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT GOVERNMENT SCHEMES

The upcoming International Purple Fest – Goa 2024 is set to become a global platform to enable ideas exchange in the ‘Persons with Disabilities’ domain while also being a crucial forum to raise awareness about the Government schemes for welfare of PwDs among others.

As part of the preparations, a significant meeting was convened at the Goa Government’s Accounts Department at Porvorim to apprise Swayampurna Mitras about the much-anticipated International Purple Fest – Goa scheduled from January 8 to 13; in the presence of Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant, Minister for Social Welfare, Subhash Phal Dessai, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Guruprasad Pawaskar, MLA-Curtorim, Aleixo Reginald Lourenco, MLA- Cortalim, Antonio Vas and Assistant Collector North Goa Ayushi Kumari (IAS).

The primary purpose of the meeting was to brief the Swayampurna Mitras about the International Purple Fest- Goa, that would provide a platform for PwDs to showcase their abilities and talents. The event encompasses various sessions focusing on different types of disabilities, guiding participants on effectively facing and managing challenges. Additionally, special sessions have been organised for parents of PwDs, offering valuable guidance on care-giving.

Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant reflected, stating, “Last year’s Purple Fest was a revelation. Discussions about this event spread not only in Goa, but across the country.” He encouraged the Swayampurna Mitras to actively engage in their communities, identifying disabled individuals and assisting them in obtaining a UDID card. The card, he said, helps facilitate access to necessary equipment, aligning with Goa’s commitment to supporting the disability community.

Minister for Social Welfare, Subhash Phal Dessai, expressed gratitude for the commendation and abilities of those involved in the initiative. He highlighted the significance of Purple Fest as a movement, providing a revolutionary step in the lives of individuals with disabilities. “The event serves as a crucial platform for raising awareness about various government schemes, enlightening people about the diverse facilities and support services offered” he said.

Goa State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Guruprasad Pawaskar, initiated the meeting with a comprehensive presentation, unveiling a diverse spectrum of activities and attractions at the much anticipated event. Noteworthy additions this year will encompass excursions, cruises, movie screenings, and the introduction of numerous engaging games and activities, promising participants a dynamic and enjoyable experience.

MLA-Curtorim, Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, elaborated on the ADIP scheme (Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase / Fitting of Aids and Appliances), emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing necessary equipment to individuals with a 40% disability certificate and a minimum monthly income of Rs. 22,500. “This initiative ensures coverage for a substantial portion of the population, fostering inclusivity and support,” he said.

The International Purple Fest- Goa stands as a testament to Goa’s dedication to inclusivity, providing a vibrant and empowering space for individuals with disabilities.
