Commemorating Year 2023 as the ‘International Year of Millets’, St. Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim, organised an inter-collegiate interaction themed “Through Millets we Grow” to raise awareness of and encourage the production and consumption of millets.
The IQAC of St. Joseph Vaz College in collaboration with the Zonal Agricultural Office (ZAO), Margao, organised the event, on March 23, 2023.
In his opening address, administrator Rev. Prof. Simao R.Diniz welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of the event. Chief Guest Miguel Braganza spoke to the participants and explained how millets can be served to people who don’t like them, by using delectable recipes. The resource persons for the event were Vismita Marathe from KVK,South and Jovita Rosada Siqueira from ZAO, Margao. Vismita Marathe gave a presentation on the various varieties of millets and their significance in daily life for added health advantages. Jovita gave students and staffs a demonstration of how to make the well-known recipe Ambil. There were two competitions held for the participants, “The Millet Dish” and “The Millet Art Gallery”, which were attended by participants from various colleges.
The first place for the Millet Dish competition was secured by Prajwal Sawant and Flossy Lucas from St. Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim whereas the second place went to Ashlesha Mallya and Arwaaz Khan from Kamaxi College of Culinary Arts, Verna. Similarly the first prize for the Millet Art Gallery competition was given to Shubham Kharwat and Yashasvie Gaunekar from Dhempe College, Miramar, and second place went to Vaishnavi Chodankar and M Divyanka Borkar from St. Xaviers College, Mapusa.
A memento with participation certificates was presented to each college for the participants. The event concluded with the principal, Dr. Maria A.A.R. Fonseca, offering the Vote of Thanks. Overall, the event was successful in achieving its objective and provided a platform for the participants to learn and share their knowledge, states a press release.
