Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte felicitated Drishti Marine lifesavers involved in the recent rescue of 27 fishermen, who were onboard a distressed fishing boat that capsised after being stranded in the Mobor river mouth for several hours.
In a crucial midnight operation which involved the combined teamwork of over 25 lifesavers – in the sea and on shore – Drishti Marine carried out the rescue effort and administered post-rescue medical first aid to the rescued fishermen, which led to lives being saved. The monsoon conditions with high waves and winds made the rescue challenging, according to Drishti Marine.
Drishti Marine lifesavers are skilled in water-based rescues involving challenging weather conditions and are trained to conduct rescues in all kinds of weather.
Speaking to the lifesavers Khaunte said, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the lifesavers for their bravery and commendable service. Rescuing 27 fishermen was a truly heroic act and stands as an inspiring example of selfless dedication. Keep up the excellent work.”
“Sea-based rescues can be challenging and require highly skilled personnel to conduct the rescues. Anybody involved in a rescue operation should be adequately trained in sea-based rescues and handling medical emergencies. A wrong move – even though well intentioned – can put the lives of the rescuer and the victim at risk. We urge the members of the fishing community and persons who may be a witness at the time of a rescue effort, to work strictly under the guidance of the Drishti Marine lifesavers present. We urge good samaritans to not take matters into their hands for their own safety”, said Navin Awasthi, CEO, Drishti Marine.
Drishti Marine lifesavers Lovu Gaonkar, Samir Gaonkar, Sunil Velip, Sashikant Jadhav, Satish Gaonkar, Santendra Velip, and Kapil Velip were felicitated at the hands of the Tourism Minister earlier today at Paryatan Bhavan in the presence of dignitaries and stakeholders.
