PANAJI: ‘Goan Rebels’ led by Tejan Fallary, edged out Power Smashers 120 – 115 in the second edition of the All-Goa Vasco Badminton League (VBL) 2022, organised by Chicalim Badminton Club on Sunday. The event saw six teams vying for the coveted VBL Trophy.
Several of Goa’s top-ranking players including India international shuttler Arjun Fallary, battled it out for glory on an eventful day at the multipurpose stadium at Fatorda.
The winners, Goan Rebels won a cash purse of Rs 1 lakh while the runners-up Power Smashers were awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000. ‘Ace Raqueteers’ won third place beating Team Flying Gravity with a scoreline of 120 – 101. The team was awarded a cash prize of Rs 35,000.
Sanath Kamath and Yasmin Sayed (both of Goan Rebels) emerged as Best Male and Best Female player of VBL respectively.
VBL was conducted in the team-event manner, and played in a league format where each team played the other 5 teams. Eight games per match were played comprising of 15 points per game leading to a cumulative score of 120 points per match. At the end of the league stages, top two teams competed in the finals and 3rd / 4th placed teams competed for the 3rd place prize.
V M Prabhudesai, Executive Director of Sports Authority of Goa, graced the occasion as the chief guest; along with guest of honour, Narahar Thakur, Goa Badminton Association president and Sandeep Heble, GBA secretary.
President of Chicalim Badminton Club (CBC), Praveen Shenoy was delighted with the success of the tournament.
“The second edition was a resounding success with participation from all ranking players and non-ranking players of Goa across the districts and talukas of Goa. We, at CBC, pride ourselves in organising this annual event to enable the players to compete fiercely and lay down a platform for competitiveness amongst young budding talents of Goa. We hope to see many of these young stars of Goa represent India at international level and make us all proud. With this event, we have set the benchmark and standard of badminton tournaments in Goa to a new level and have a larger vision of making Goa the ultimate international destination for the sport of badminton,” said Shenoy.

Runners-Up: Power Smashers – owned by Dinesh Pai of Priority Constructions; Captain: Navneet Nasnodkar; Vice-Captain: Manish Pankhania.
3rd-Place: Ace Raqueteers – owned by Vikas Nanu of Essen Group; Captain: Sunny Sawant & Vice-Captain: Meghal Khautankar.
