PANAJI: Excellence, respect and friendship are at the core of the Olympic Movement. And in the celebration of International Olympic Day on June 23, the emphasis in general has been on the application of the spirit of the Games, into our lives. Goans Hockey in collaboration with Department of Physical Education & Sports of SSA Government College-Pernem had organised a national-level webinar ‘Value Education Through The Olympic Movement’ on Wednesday.
“Blood, sweat, and tears do not even come close, at the Olympic Games, as everything is on the line; this makes each and every triumph that much more bigger, bolder, and at times, breathtaking,” was the sentiment as participants from Goa and other parts of India expressed their thoughts focused on value education.
Prominent figures at the session were – active member in the International Olympic movement, Dr. Benu Gupta, Associate Professor in Physical Education & Sports Sciences, KMC, Delhi University; Alpine mountaineer Manisha Waghmare, who has summited 6 of the tallest mountains, Alexander Remedios, veteran hockey coach, among others.
Dr. Benu appreciated the initiative taken by both the organisers of this event and mentioned the need for taking the Olympic Movement to the grassroot level of this country. Maharashtrian mountaineer, Manisha stressed the importance of being humble no matter one’s achievements.
Beny Viegas, Secretary of Goans Hockey and Inacio Fernandes, Executive member were also part of the webinar. Lt. (Dr.) Sam Joseph Braganza, Joint-Secretary (North) of Goans Hockey and PE Director of S.S.A. Govt. College was the resource person and the overall coordinator. He underlined the need of inculcating values into students and athletes through the Olympic Movement. Dr Braganza said that sports has the potential to inspire peace and a sense of belonging among world citizens.
