26TH ALL INDIA KONKANI SAHITYA SAMMELAN HELD IN KERALA

The 26th All India Konkani Sahitya Sammelan held at Ernakulam, Kerala unanimously complimented the Goa government for its stand vis vis the changes sought in the official language act by the protagonists of Marathi language and those demanding Roman script for education in Konkani  and appealed to the opposition MLA’s not to play with the future of students and the secular fabric of Goa .

In another resolution, the sammelan appealed to the Goa government to extend the scheme of grants for  publishers publishing Konkani books to writers from neighbouring states whose books are published by Goan publishers .

The sammelan also demanded with the government to open primary schools in talukas where not a single primary school in Konkani medium exists. Many other resolutions related to language and culture were also passed at the sammelan.

At the concluding of the two-day event hosted by several Konkani organisations of Kerala, chief guest Justice N. Nagresh emphasised the need of spoken Konkani for the survival of the language .Citing the report of the UNESCO which has classified the languages into critically, severely vulnerable  endangered languages and appealed to the assembled crowed to examine in what stage Konkani stands today.

Guest of honour and rewoned Kannada writer Jayant Kaykini said that he is a Konkani writer writing in Kannada . He further said that poetry should make its readers restless and new writers should get immersed in literature in order to make a good begining in their writing careers.

Others who spoke on the ocassion were president of the sammelan, Madhav Borkar and  working president of All India Konkani Parishad, Chetan Acharya . The function was compeered by Titus Noronha and vote of thanks was proposed by Sneha Sabnis.
