Saturday brought a silver medal in weightlifting with Shubham Verma finishing second in the men’s 102kg category; while the hosts continued to produce medals from the sport of Modern Pentathlon with two more bronze medals coming in today. Another bronze late in the evening from Pencak Silat, took the day’s tally to four medals for Team Goa at the 37th National Games Goa 2023.
Verma lifted a total of 326 kg to finish second behind Kojum Taba of Services Sports Control Board. Assam’s Md. Jameir Hussain bagged the bronze with a total lift of 325.
The Goa lifter began his snatch events with a lift of 138 kg and successfully attempted 143 kg in the second. However, he failed at 146 kg and was fourth at the end before the start of clean and jerk.
This is where he started his charge by lifting 183 kg in his second attempt to jump to second position. He then jumped to 188 kg to try and win the gold medal but failed.
“I am happy that I could help Goa win its first medal in weightlifting. I thought I could win the gold medal but I hurried a bit during my lift and got unbalanced and lost my chance,” said Shubham after bagging the medal.
Goa bagged a bronze medal in men’s team Biathle event in the Modern Pentathlon competition at the Ponda Sports Complex in the morning. The Goan medal-winning team comprised Yug Dalvi, Shivnath Majik and Narayan Giri.
Later in the day, Goa’s Mixed-Relay Biathle team won a bronze medal through Yug Dalvi and Pratiksha Gaonkar.
Goa’s Anslet Sebastian clinched a bronze medal in women’s C 55-60kg Tanding (fighting) event of Pencak Silat competition, to make it a productive day for the hosts.
Meanwhile in women’s football, hosts Goa suffered a 1-4 loss to Haryana in a Group B match at Tilak Maidan, Vasco. Michel Castanha had given Goa the lead in the first half but Haryana made a strong comeback as Rajni Bala, Neha, Santosh, and Puja scored a goal each to take their team to victory.
