Former Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur, on Tuesday made a special appearance at the FIDE World Cup 2025 and praised the All India Chess Federation not only for hosting the event in the country after two decades, but also for the steps taken over the years to make India a global chess superpower.
The former Sports Minister Thakur officially took the opening step in the quarter-final match between Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi and Chinese Grandmaster Wei Yi.
Thakur said, “Chess is perhaps the greatest intellectual legacy India has bestowed upon the world. It is not just a game, but a reflection of strategic depth and philosophical wisdom. This magnificent game not only sharpens the mind but also teaches valuable lessons of patience and resilience, leading one on the path of intellectual pursuit of strategic mastery. This FIDE World Cup event is a historic moment not only because we are hosting the World Cup after two decades, but also because the trophy is now named after Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand. This is not a trophy for decades to come, but for centuries to come.”
Anand won the first two editions of the FIDE World Cup in 2000 and 2002 and was the leading Indian chess player for more than three decades. However, in recent years, several Indian players have been making their mark on the world stage.
Thakur said, “Goa has emerged as a major hub for global events in India. Whether it’s the FIDE Chess World Cup or the Film Festival, Goa has made a strong impression through successful events. Recently, India successfully hosted the Chess Olympiad Torch Relay in Chennai.”
Thakur highlighted the role of the AICF, under the leadership of President Nitin Narang, in accelerating the pace of development with initiatives such as hosting major international competitions in the country and providing financial assistance to players. He said, “I think the biggest step taken by the All India Chess Federation in the last two years is providing annual grants to 42 players.” He further stated that the way the AICF is working together for the development of the sport is an example for all to follow.
Thakur also spoke about the resolve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to host the 2036 Olympic Games in India and said that hosting such mega events by the National Federations is a step in the right direction.
