Goa all-rounder Yash Kasvankar justified his selection with a five-wicket haul in the first innings against Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy Elite match that began at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on Sunday. UP were all out for 202 runs.
India star Rinku Singh fought a lone battle for UP, scoring an unbeaten 118 off 186 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes.
Goa then made a positive start to their first innings, reaching 43 without loss in 12 overs at stumps to take control of the opening day.
Suyash Prabhudessai was unbeaten on 12, while Shivendra Bhujbal was batting on 31 at the close of play. The visitors are trailing by 159 runs and will look to build crucial first-innings lead with a strong batting performance on the second day.
After winning the toss, Uttar Pradesh elected to bat first. Pacer Ruthvik Naik struck twice, dismissing Abhishek Goswami and Aryan Juyal to reduce the hosts to 31 for two. Kasvankar then ran out Karan Sharma for a duck, leaving Uttar Pradesh struggling at 33 for three.
Madhav Kaushik, who scored 45, and Rinku Singh added 59 runs for the fourth wicket. Shubham Tari broke the threatening partnership, after which Kasvankar continued to trouble the Uttar Pradesh batters with his disciplined bowling. The hosts slumped to 137 for nine before Rinku’s unbeaten century lifted them past the 200-run mark.
Goa made two changes to their playing XI for the match, dropping Mohit Redkar and Deeparaj Gaonkar, who featured in the opening game, and bringing in Yash Kasvankar and Amulya Pandrekar.
